He could have told everyone he played golf-- couldn't he??

The only excuse I can see (in my muddled mind) is that he may have, by that point, realize that he could not continue to sustain the ruse of "golfing" on the day of her disappearance.

But the fact that he tolf Amy, and another person, tells me that he meant to use golfing as an excuse if he could.

Secretive Snott, couldn't sustain golfing because courses keep records. You have to sign in and pay to play on the course. He didn't have that going. It seems his hole motivation for fishing was for body disposal. He was hoping that her body would never be found. So fishing would have worked if her body never surfaced.
Geez, He should have just told everyone that he went fishing in his new boat...
