Chief Illiniwek is silly. He dresses like a Sioux Indian, first of all. His costume was inspired by a U of I grad's visit to North Dakota. And "Fighting Illini" is a misnomer. The Illini never did much fighting. They were always at the mercy of the Iroquois.

This will be "decided" by the board of trustees tomorrow, due to a new board trustee shoving this through (a crony of the inane governor). People are furious.

Chief Illiniwek is silly. He dresses like a Sioux Indian, first of all. His costume was inspired by a U of I grad's visit to North Dakota.

The concept of Chief Illiniwek to serve as a symbol for the state's most prominent public university was approved by surviving descendants of the Illini tribe back in the 1920s. This is not a buffoonish caricature like Chief Wahoo or a generic term such as Braves, Redskins, et al, but an honest attempt to honor a specific tribe that once resided in Illinois. And how do we know that different tribes didn't dress at least somewhat alike. The Illini were mostly wiped out around 1770 at Starved Rock by the Potowatomie, not the Iroquois. Probably not a whole lot of accurate documentation of their particular style of dress.

And "Fighting Illini" is a misnomer. The Illini never did much fighting. They were always at the mercy of the Iroquois.

As were most of the tribes of the Northlands.
