It doesn't really appear that the "southern" portion of the moon was ever totally eclipsed.I had that impression too. I've seen it where it goes blood red all over.

That's because the moon didn't go through the center of the earth's shadow this eclipse, only the southern portion of it.

Prime conditions in east Tennessee...as clear as it ever gets in the south...the sky filled with stars during the totality phase. One drawback...some jack*ss car dealership was running spotlights all over the sky during the first part of the eclipse. Lights finally went out about 8:15 EST...I gather the dealership was the recipient of a few ugly phone calls. I'm in the market for a new car, but I know where I WON'T be buying one.

It doesn't really appear that the "southern" portion of the moon was ever totally eclipsed. I think we can trust that the moon was within the earth's umbra during the predicted time of totality. I believe that near the edge of the umbra the light refracted through the earth's atmosphere is brighter and whiter than the more sharply refracted light nearer the center which is darker and redder.
You can actually see this when you look at the partially eclipsed moon, but the penumbra is so much brighter it tends to make the umbra appear uniformly dark.

Just logged back on............it was interesting to watch here in Charlottesville, VA. This was the first CLEAR and FROSTY night we've had here in awhile. It's about 1/2 back to normal now.

This picture, taken from
Apollo 11 has become the standard image of the moon. The
Weather Channel uses it, even though it's an impossible view from the earth. It appears in many movies and ads as well, and at one time was on the web page of a Wiccan group.
You can compare it with a similar shot from Apollo 17 .

That map helped me here in Eureka Ca. but it was too late. We have had rain all day and should be having a thubder storm right now but low and behold, the clouds parted at 6:20 or so and when I looked it was 3/8 returned and I watched till the clounds returned when it was 3/4 about 10 minutes ago
