Cranky SA not happy about his party's choice of OS

Is there any significance to what Web server/platform combinations 2004 presidential candidates are using?

As we swing into the thick of the 2004 electoral playoffs, it's interesting to see what kinds of platforms are running under the candidates' official campaign Web sites. Netcraft has a handy feature called "What's that site running?" that lets us see combinations of Web servers and OS platforms. So here's a quick rundown, in alphabetical order:

George W. Bush: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

Wesley Clark: Apache on Linux

Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD

John Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"

Richard Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

John Kerry: Apache on Linux

Dennis Kucinich Apache on Linux

Carol Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD

Al Sharpton: Apache on Solaris 8

Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD For what it's worth, the Republican National Committee is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000, while the Democratic National Committee is running Apache on Linux.

As of this writing, November 5, 2003, the RNC has an uptime of 4.26 days (maximum of 39.04) and a 90-day moving average of 16.91. The DNC has an uptime of 445.02 days (also the maximum) and a 90-day moving average of 395.38 days.

Draw your own conclusions.

evidently big enough for you to stop by the thread..

Touche'. :) But truthfully, the only thing that makes me roll my eyes is the knee-jerk anti-Microsoftisms.

I've maintained both Windows and Unix machines, and frankly the users of both systems tire me out :) The computers on the other hand were fine. Do I reboot Windows machines more? Of course. But it just wasn't that big of a deal to me.

So how did the Dems answer in the "Rock the Vote" debate to Mac vs. PC? Did any say Linux? :-)

"Apache on FreeBSD" could well be a Mac running OSX as that is FreeBSD at it's core and includes Apache. Thus there may be as many running Mac servers (Dean, Mosley-Braun and Leiberman) as are running Linux and more than were running Windows.

It might also reflect the amount of traffic each site sees ;)

It won't show up as FreeBSD since Apple's new OS's kernel is called Darwin. The user space tools are based on FreeBSD.

I run Linux not because I don't want to pay... but because I want the flexibility to do what I need to do in crafting services for our customers. I also enjoy the stability and security. That's what it comes down to.

Well I run Linux because it's NOT Microsoft. I was simply pointing out a lib mindset, not bashing Linux.
