The whereabouts of Mohammed and Binalshibh have not been revealed by the US authorities. Asked whether torture was being used on the two men, J.Cofer Black, the US State Department co-ordinator for counterterrorism, has said: "All I can say to that is that there is a before and an after September 11." He added: "We have taken off our kid gloves."

However, according to the information leaked to Der Spiegel magazine, Binalshibh began to talk while he was still in the custody of Pakistan's intelligence service.

Mohammed was less co-operative, spending the first two days of his captivity crouching on the floor of his cell and reciting verses from the Koran.

Since then Mohammed has revealed details of much of the network he built up in the US to destroy bridges, planes, trains and fuel supplies.

He has admitted that one of his associates was Iyman Faris, a Kashmiri truck driver who was jailed for 20 years last week in Virginia after he admitted scouting New York's Brooklyn Bridge for a possible attack.

There is some suspicion that a few al-Qaeda operatives have been turned by their US captors in an effort to break down al-Qaeda's international structure further.

Mohammed has admitted that after September 11, while he was still on the run, he continued to plan attacks in the US, including one scheme to blow up petrol stations in New York and Washington.

I think it's an afterthought. All the stuff I've read said that they didn't have a specific date in mind. Once everything was organized and all the terrorists were here then Atta picked the date 9/11.

Lots of leaked information and unnamed soures today identifying our past and current efforts against al-Qaeda and other jihadist irregulars. I think the 16 helicopter deaths may have had something to do with it.

No, we are about to prosecute a Lt. Col West for firing a gun into the ground to intimidate an Iraqi under questioning in a plot to blow up US soldiers.

The ploy worked - the guy spilled the beans and the attack was foiled.

And yet the PC Pentagon wants to prosecute Col West for violation of the "Rules of War".

Almost certainly an afterthought, given Atta's coded message using "sticks" to identify the final date of the attack. If the attack was planned for 9/11 from the start, there would've been no need of the code.

This article also confirms that Atta's trip to Spain in July was for a meeting related to the action. Previously, that had been speculation, as I recall.

This was probably a "purpose leak".

And the above probably identifies the purpose. Nothing like sowing a little doubt and uncertainty about one's associates...
