ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, President Bush signs a law banning the gruesome abortion procedure known as partial-birth abortion. For the Susan B. Anthony List and the dozens of pro-life organizations who have worked tirelessly to get this law passed, a law supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans, this is a very special day of celebration.
"This is an incredible moment for anyone who recognizes that a civilized nation cannot allow an abortion procedure that takes the life of a child in the very process of being born," said Jennifer Bingham, Executive Director of the Susan B. Anthony List. "We know that this dangerous and gruesome procedure is never medically necessary to save the life of the mother despite the claims made by abortion advocates." Ms. Bingham continued, "After so much work by our members in all 50 states and other pro-life organizations throughout the country, we are proud to finally see the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban signed into law." "After so long and so much effort, this is an emotional event that fulfills the desire of a nation that will not tolerate such barbaric, unrestricted abortion procedures," Ms. Bingham said.
There are at least 2,300 partial-birth abortions performed each year in the United States, according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which is affiliated with Planned Parenthood. The House and Senate first banned partial birth abortions in 1996, and again in 1998, only to have then-President Clinton veto the widely supported bill each time.
The Susan B. Anthony List has generated 204,000 letters and petitions to Congress over the last three years encouraging Congress to ban this barbaric procedure. The Susan B. Anthony List is a membership organization with a connected PAC, which trains pro-life activists and candidates, advocates the passage of pro-life legislation in Congress, works to dispel the myths about abortion, educates women voters on the importance of voting, and works to increase the percentage of pro-life women in Congress. WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins released the following statement today as the nation saw the first federal legislation limiting abortion since Roe v. Wade become law:
"President Bush did today what Bill Clinton should have done in 1996, ban a barbaric procedure that is nothing short of infanticide. The view of the American people on this issue has been clear for years and Washington is finally catching up with public opinion.
"Today signifies a turning point in the debate over abortion. There are several pieces of legislation still awaiting action in Congress which would place further restrictions on abortions and which the majority of Americans support -- from the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, also known as "Laci and Conner's Law," to the Informed Choice Act, which would allow federal dollars to be used to place ultra-sound equipment in pregnancy resource centers around the country.
"What should outrage Americans is that as the pro-abortion lobby realizes it is losing support for its 'abortion on demand' agenda, it is planning to do a end run around the public by finding activist liberal judges to do their bidding. In fact, they have already turned to the courts to overturn the partial-birth abortion ban signed into law today.
"The law passed by Congress and signed today by President Bush fully addresses the issues raised by the Supreme Court in Stenberg v. Carhart. From a tightened definition of the partial-birth abortion procedure to evidence showing that it is never medically necessary, the bill is constitutionally sound. Attorney General John Ashcroft must be ready and willing to put forth whatever resources are necessary to defend this Constitutional law."
