If the etymology is done correctly the translation of felo de se is "robber of self", hence one who kills himself. But felo, out of this phrase, does not mean "kill". It means thief.
"Felos" is also the Old English spelling of "fellows" which, in those days, meant "military peers" or "knights of equal rank".
