I think part of it is that there's no obvious front runner. There's an actual contest to cover, so it's news. Most recent primaries have been foregone conclusions.

Agree, but I still can't imagine any comparable set of Republican hopefuls receiving this much airtime, much less in prime time. I mean, how many debates do they really need to state their positions? What are we up to now--a dozen???
