In Germany, they have dialects of German (pfalzische, Schwaebisch, Bayerische, and several others) but everyone speaks and understands Hoch-Deutch(High German)...

Same thing in Italy...

I think the "as for me and my house thing works" quite well...

And though I wish everyone were allowed to celebrate their culture and background with their family and in their homes (I guess I watched "My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding too many times), I think everyone speaking a common language is about saying that regardless of where our ancestors come from, this is something we will share as a nation... It does not have to be a law but it needs to be understood...

That is, by far, the best argument I've heard to enforce ENGLISH ONLY. I disagree that it not become law lest we continue to have the government spending $$$ translating documents from English and department stores permitting employees to count change in a foreign language.
