To: Sir Gawain; All
...I remember our 1st Cavalry Division Airmobile's just chomping at the bit for its first major contact with invading North Vietnamese Communist Army Regiments from the moment we arrived in a then Free South Vietnam in 1965.
...That opportunity came as our Communist Enemy from the North was attempting to cut a then Free South Vietnam in half at the Central Highlands and making a dash for Saigon in 1965, which is how the Communists did win the war 10 years later after we had left Vietnam behind to its Fate.
...This was all Lt. Col. AN's Plan in 1965, the man Lt. Col. HAL G. MOORE faced at Landing Zone X-Ray, and 10 years later as Gen. AN in 1975. The man was no pushover or dummy as an Officer or Planner.
...In October 1965 we knew we were facing an Enemy of at least 6,000 North Vietnamese Army Regulars near the Cambodian Border as it was that many who had just broken off a weeks long engagement surrounding the Plei Me Special Forces Camp that blocked their way to the rest of the Central Highlands.
...We were looking for them, they were looking for us ...to fight.
...In other words our entire 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry was on RECON to prove the effectiveness of the same Air Assault Helicopter Tactics that were later used so effectively in the First Gulf War.
...Sometimes in Battle you takes what you get in order to get what you want in the end..?
...The 1/7th Cavalry prevailed in its 2nd Battle of the Little Big Horn at Landing Zone X-Ray, only to have its poorly led brother 2/7th Cavalry cut to shreads from ambush by 2 North Vietnamese Regiments the next day higher up the Valley floor at Landing Zone Albany.
...One of the ambushed Combatants there was a young Pfc. JACK SMITH, son of then ABC-TV News Anchor HOWARD K. SMITH, who was severly wounded ..survived and is now dying of Pancreatic Cancer 38 years later.
Praise GOD that LOVE is the Only Reality and that GOD is LOVE..?
