When you read media accounts of "what doctors say" and "what doctors believe"--take this with a grain of salt. I don't think any doctor ought to offer any opinion to nimrod journalist because they'll be misquoted and mischaracterized. What was actually said was likely much different than what the journalist wrote. Or went through a third party.
The typical legend you hear is "the doc only gave me a month to live, and five years later I'm fine!"
Probably the doctor spelled out several scenarios, and the listener picked the worst one, one that he could resent , in public, later.
