The latest marketing technique is "stelth word of mouth" marketing. You send paid employee to areas with people to talk up a product. So you would send a person to a bar to talk up a new cigarette line. You pay people to go onto chat rooms and talk up a movie.

You saw 60 Minutes as well...

Nothing wrong with paying people to talk up your product, IMO.

By the way, have you tried Vanilla Pepsi? It's pretty darn good!

yes, that show O.C. send mailers of the first two episodes on DVDs to 20,000 teens or something, to create "buzz" Now the female teen lead is topless in a rock video (17 years old) it has gone from aint it cool news to hiring marketing firms to plant blog entries about hot properties etc.

they even monitor the illegal downloads of MP3 to see which songs are hot, and if they should do marketing campaigns in certain markets.
