Is anyone else getting a "Don't be Late" E-mail (vanity)?

Attached to the note is a file "readnow.zip"

I have the latest Symantec definitions, but the note still got through. Is this file a virus, or a hoax?

Bad advice. Never open an email or even put in the preview window anything that you don't know what it is -- especially if you are using Outlook. There are too many exploits that operate without user intervention. There are also several exploits that target zip clients. Open a .zip, overflow a buffer in the client, and you're infected. You're right, probably in this case he can get away with it since it is a known virus, but it may be something else next time.

What concerns me is the fact that message got through Symantec Norton Antivirus. My definition is from 11/1/03. Any speculation on when Norton will be able to detect it?

Lesson here: never trust your antivirus to be foolproof any more than you would trust the safety on your "instument of self-defense."

But opening a .zip file will not excecute anthing. So you can atleast double click on the attachement.

That would be true if it really were a zip file. Notice the last extension in the name:

Attachment: readnow.zip (readnow.doc.scr)

It's actually a script file masquerading as a document file. If you have "known file extensions" turned off (like many people do), you'll see it as a "safe" .doc file. It's anything but safe.

Perhaps your right. I do not you any MS email programs. What I said is correct if it is a .zip file and not a file masquerading as a zip. I always have extensions turned on. But hey, I am oldskool.
