My view of Texas was distorted by having been a year in South Dakota, followed by 3 1/2 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Leaving there, driving to Florida to visit family and then up to Myrtle Beach, SC, I nearly died going down the Rockies with a coat on (June) and then racing across Texas in 105-degree heat with no a/c in the van!
"How could anyone live here?!!" was my thought..:))
Under those conditions I can see why you wouldn't have the best perspective on this lovely state. But it's not like that all year round, if it were I wouldn't be able to live here!
