I missed this thread the other day, but a hearty welcome home, Mike! The sacrifices of you and your family in the defense of our nation and our freedom are recognized and truly appreciated. Enjoy your well deserved R&R time, and thanks for proudly carrying the flag. God bless!

One of those defending freedom on the front lines is home for some R&R. Here's his report:

Thank you all for the welcome home, I was two hours from getting on the plane when i received a call about our aircraft being shot down, please pray for the families of all the brave americans who lost their lives.

I am glad to be home and also anxious in a way to get back and finish what we are doing there, it is a good cause and we must prevail. We will continue to send soldiers home, our unit alone will send 35 home this month and almost 40 in dec.

Pay no attention to the media, they have been nowhere around when good things happen. They cower in hotels until an american gets killed and then scurry out into the light like cockroaches. Screw Them!!!

1SG Mike Milam, Co F 106th Avn

First Sgt, thanks for the report and please see my above post for how much we appreciate you and your colleagues.

Hero's BUMP!

Mike--- If and when you get a chance, would you care to report some of the other "non-classified" details of your time. Some of us would like to hear a first-hand report. (with your permission, of course!)

See, I've got a cousin over there, and I want to stay concerned for his safety.

A few things, in general. I am the 1SG of a CH47D Medium lift Helicopter Company, we are stationed about 20 miles from Baghdad. We fly missions that are everything from passengers to strictly cargo. Quality of life is steadily improving for the soldiers there. We are slowly transitioning to Shower and latrine trailers, dining facilities are being constructed.

There are occasional rocket and mortar attacks directed at the base and once in a while they get lucky and hit something, they are finally starting to decrease. The Air Force is starting to pick up more missions delivering supplies and equipment by air. This is a great thing, the people at the greatest rsk in Iraq currently are the people in Transportation Units who are traveling the roads almost non-stop. I pray for them everyday.

Sarge---

So, what's the best thing that's happened to you while you've been over there?

Any memorable things that stick out for you?

And the people? What's it like?

(You can answer at your leisure. I'm just being nosy.... 8-))

The most memorable thing is the scariest...my three day convoy to northern Iraq...as far as the Iraqis I haven't interacted with them that much, especially at the base I am at...the few I have met seem genuinely happy that the US is there.

"The "do NOT disturb" sign is already placed on their door; they'll be busy ;~))

I don't know if the couple is planning on adding to the US population, but I always
get a smile from this historical perspective on military leave, according to
General George S. Patton, Jr.:

"...We don't want yellow cowards in this Army. They should be killed off like rats.
If not, they will go home after this war and breed more cowards.
The brave men will breed more brave men...."

(I hope this passage doesn't offend anyone's sensitivities...)

Thank you for the reports, and the service. You know we're here for you all.

Carry on!

Nanc., see you whenever. We'll hold off the wankers. *g*

Just a ping to let you know that someone just called Charlie Sykes show (WTMJ Milwaukee) to honor you, and your husband on todays Veteran's Day.

You are loved.

Have a great time with Mike and cherish every minute. He is in our hearts and prayers. We as Americans are proud of him and his service to our Country.

Charlie Sykes was honoring Veterans today and invited listeners to call in or email. One email said something to the effect of "I would like to thank my friend Nancy's husband, Mike, in Illinois, who is home on leave right now" It then went on to explain that Mikes unit was the one that had a helicopter crash while trying to get home for R&R.

The story matched the one that I read last week here on Free Republic about you and your husband. I automatically assumed it was you.

I didn't hear if they mentioned a name on who requested the honor. I was just coming into the room when I heard it.

Once again, enjoy his leave.
