It is ridiculous that over 50% of self-described Jews do not believe in God. If you do not believe in God, by definition you cannot be Jewish. Same with those who claim to be Protestant or Catholic and don't believe in God. They should not call themselves Protestant or Catholic.

What is actually amazing about this survey is one statistic: That over 1/4 of American adults attend a religious service every week. While some might look at that with doom and gloom, that's a pretty impressive statistic in a country of 280 million people.

Ethnic Jews. There is no excuse for Christians to not believe fully in God.

Problem is in our era there are Orthodox Jews, American Jews(More Liberal than Jewish), and JEws from tribes that
didNOT exist in bible times. So one can claim their Jewish blood -but deney their Jewish faith Siggi Freud was such
a one I suspect.

God doesn't have any grandchildren. To claim to be protestant or Catholic because their parents were or they grew up going to church doesn't make you a protestant or Catholic. It's a personal thing.

Considering the influx of Darwin/Marxist PC paganism, these numbers are really pretty good. It appears the majority aren't falling for the "I am God/Goddess" Darwinist propaganda.

I don't know about here in America, but in Israel in more than one poll, 2/3 of Israeli Jews do not believe in God. Sad but true.

We have a teenage boy coming to our church (Protestant) who also attends CCD. He told his Sunday School class that his CCD teacher is an atheist. Bizarre, huh? I'm not surprised by this study. For many, regardless of their denomination or religion, church or synagogue is a social thing.

Americans are far more likely to believe in God and to attend religious services than people in most other developed countries, particularly in Europe.

And Europeans are constantly making cracks about American materialism as if some how Europeans were the religious ones.  On top of that, with their loud boorish boastful hypocritical false pride they've managed to convince the developing countries that it's the Americans who've turned their backs on our Creator and not the Europeans.

I tell ya' I feel like Rodney Dangerfield.

I think a more interesting question would be: "how would you like to be buried?"

Most religous people are involved just to be in a social club. To find dates and so on.

It's something I might consider myself. At least I'll know I'm not the only phoney.

Why is anybody surprised. We speak of nations as being Christian, Jewish (Israel only), Moslem, Hindu... It is only a religious tradition we have.

We live in a Christian nation. There are many who would identify themselves as Christian, but only because that is their family heritage. True Christianity requires a relationship with Jesus Christ, and a desire and integrity to be like Him. That integrity is not important, is a sad commentary on our society.

Fortunately, God is worried about the polls. It isn't important how popular God is with people. What is imporatnt is how popular you are with God.

So, how many atheists believe in God? If some "Christians" don't, you'd think a few "atheists" would :-)

Or maybe the disbelieving "Christians" were dyslexic, and thought they had been asked whether they believe in Dog?

But my guess is that some people don't know the canonical meaning of certain words. "Christian," for instance.

Those are the churches that "tickle the ears". The Bible says God has little favor for them.

Agreed. I live in a small community in uberliberal Western Washington. The three established church congregations have enlarged the facilities recently. Two more are under construction. It's not just the growth fueling the need for larger churches.

What is imporatnt is how popular you are with God.

I'm agnostic, but one of my favorite lines from a book is from Stephen King's "The Stand". Nick Andros, a young deaf mute, is telling an old religious woman (Mother Abagail) that he doesn't believe in God. She laughs and answers "That don't matter! He believes in YOU."

"If you do not believe in God, by definition you cannot be Jewish."

The official Israeli naturalization policy is that if you're mother's Jewish, then you're Jewish too even if you're an outspoken atheist.  However, if you're not an atheist and you accept Moses, the Ten Commandments, all the traditional teachings, you are not a Jew if you happen to also believe that the Christ is divine.

They know it doesn't make sense but they're stuck on how to fix it.

Sure, one of their rites is to say "Ist fur d' hinky purdepur boink! boink!" and toss a wooden spoon over the shoulder.
