In 1/03, I bought a Kodak DX4800 (3.1mPx) at CompUSA for $175. Simple to use, it has taken 5,500+ pix. 2 rechargable batteries last all day.

Kodak is the answer. They have some new models with great German lenses, plus the handy dock to transfer to your PC. In other words, buy American!

Cameras are not subject to wind-chill but it is impressive if the electronics worked at 29 degrees.

However the wind will cause a camera to cool quicker when taken from a warm place to the cooler place.

The Kodak program is spyware though ...

Please elaborate on that statement?

I have zone alarm and I noticed that when it installed it a program called Back (something) attempts to access the internet every time the camera is hooked up and it starts transferring files. Spycatcher sees it as spywayre and it installs it's own service into the operating system that tried to run in the background. The service is named ptssvc and it is set to autostart.
Run compmgmt.msc from the run command in the start menu, click services and it's right there.

C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\ptssvc.exe

Needless to say I try to keep my system locked up fairly tight

It all depends what you want to use it for - I mean, what you are going to do with the pictures once you take them.

If you want to print them out and do the photo album thing, then a better camera is the way to go.

If you are going to use it for web display, web graphics of a online home page / photo album, you can get by with a lot less expensive camera.

Most web page resolution is 72 dpi. It does not take much of a camera to get this.

One thing for sure no matter what grade of camera you get, you are going to want a removeable media card and a card reader. Don't go from the camera to the computer - way too slow.

Other significant consideration is batteries. I use an older epson powered by 4 AA batteries. If I use the LED view finder too much, the batteries go quick. So I have the rechargeable nicads and that seems fine. Still, I mostly use the sight glass to take pics.

A good rechargable set up is important. Otherwise you will spend more on batteries than you would on film for a conventional camera.

You might check ebay. Did a quick search and this looks like a nice set up. A bit older but very functional.

Epson on eBay

I don't know the seller so you have to check that out. But this is the camera I use and it does all that I need.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Ebay is a real good value, but be careful. Buy only from a reputable seller. Check feedback rating carefully.

I guess you may have already bought a camera by now but I just noticed a Gateway ad for a 5mp digital for only $249. I am almost certain that it said it had a 3X optical zoom too.

Mavica bump. Love mine, no cables, no software, I can take all the pics I want for a friend and hand out the disks when I'm done. Easy, convenient, and comparably priced.

Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom by Canon

Around $350.00

With the Canon PowerShot S230, you've got the best of both worlds--the compact size and high style of the Digital Elph series, plus the higher resolution of a 3-megapixel camera. Updating the popular 2-megapixel PowerShot S200, the PowerShot S230 also features a 2x optical zoom, an improved 3.2x digital zoom, and movie mode for videos up to 3 minutes.

Tiny size, fits anywhere, great pictures.

I took more pictures last night with my D60, hoping to get some pictures of aurora. The camera worked fine, although there was no visible aurora to be seen. However, the temp was 21 degrees. Yes, 21 degrees. Man, was it cold! The camera worked flawlessly. Just FYI.

After reading all the comments right now there are only these cameras I'm actually considering to get for a 3-megapixel camera:

Canon A70

Canon SD100

Nikon CoolPix 3100

Olympus Stylus 300

I've heard a lot of great things about the CoolPix 3100, so that is my leading choice right now. The major concern about the Stylus 300 is the fact you have to get xD memory cards, which aren't exactly widely available. :-(
