Musgrove delivers radio address as Bush campaigns for Barbour

By MATT VOLZ Associated Press Writer November 1, 2003

JACKSON, Miss. - As President Bush headed to Mississippi to campaign for Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's opponent, Musgrove used the Democrats' weekly radio address Saturday to boast that he has created jobs and improved education despite tough economic times.

Musgrove faces Republican challenger Haley Barbour, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, in next Tuesday's election.

He told his audience that Mississippi is a different state than some may think.

"Some people think of Mississippi as a state with cotton fields, racial strife, unemployment and struggling schools. But that was the Mississippi of yesterday," he said. "Today in Mississippi, we have come together, across party and racial lines, to create opportunities for the people of our state."

Musgrove said that during his governorship, Mississippi has become the first state to put an Internet-ready computer in every classroom, has added 56,000 jobs and seen a new Nissan auto manufacturing plant open.

"I'm proud to say that under my leadership we've been able to do these things while balancing our budget and without raising taxes," Musgrove said.

"Mr. President, I know you are doing your political thing today," he said. "Our leaders need to vigorously go about the business of uplifting our economy, creating jobs, improving education for our children, making prescription drugs more affordable and fighting for our troops. And they need to fight for these things as hard as they fight on the campaign trail."

A new poll commissioned by The Associated Press and The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson found Barbour leading Musgrove, 50 percent to 45 percent. The survey of 623 likely voters was conducted Oct. 21-23 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Does anyone actually listen to these party radio addresses? Also, I remember the Democratic candidate in last year's Senate race in Colorado was chosen to deliver the party radio address on the weekend before the election, and he lost. So maybe this is a sign that Musgrove is in trouble.

Musgrove's going down ping!

"...has added 56,000 jobs..."

He's seen a net job loss.
This is getting old...

Two "Capital Gang" panelists just predicted the reelection of Musgrove -- Mark Shields and Al Hunt. A third, Margaret Carlson said she "thinks" Musgrove "can" win if he gets enough black votes. Hunt called Barbour "racist" for running a "Confederate-style" campaign. Bob Novak and Kate O'Beirne expressed their personal support for Barbour. Novak noted that Barbour uses the word "Republican" in his ads, but Musgrove does not openly use the word "Democrat." Instead, Musgrove calls himself "conservative" and "independent."

Al Hunt also said that there is a 40 percent chance that the MS Democrat legislature will wind up electing Musgrove for the second time. That prediction assumes that neither gets an outright popular majority.

What these good folks had to say is totally against conventional wisdom.

If, at this point, the incumbent isn't at 50%, he is very vulnerable. Musgrove is, not only NOT at 50%, he is behind Haley in the only two polls that have been reported. If the undecideds haven't broken for Musgrove yet, they aren't going to vote for him.

Things are looking really good for Haley. Now, we have to hope he gets 50% + 1.
If not, that's when the legislature will come into play.

Heaven help MS if that happens.
