Hopefully Jefferson would have known better than to take get all their information from late night comedians. McDonald's was lucky the woman spilled her coffee. Otherwise they could have ended up paying the bill for her internal injuries. The coffee was dangerously hot, far hotter than any reasonable person would expect. That's why they got sued, that's why they lost.

In that case, the jury apparently stuck it to McDonald's because there was evidence that many other people had been injured previously by the unusually hot coffee at McDonald's and nothing had been done about it. I don't know if they had punitive damages in Jefferson's day.
