You are correct, that's a Shpagin sub-machinegun. 7.62 X 25, good luck finding ammo. PPK as far as I know is by Walther, Russian pistols should be PM or TT.
If they got the nomenclature from the GI, sounds like he wasn't quite the expert he thought he was.

Note that Russian sources translate the designation of Georgii S. Shpagin's 1941 model machinepistol as *PPSch 41*, so that may have been picked up as an English translation from Cyrillic shipping labels or documents:
Nice little buzzguns, and the 71-round drum capacity made them a favoured souvenir through much of the latter half of the Twentieth Century. The Iranians produced their own versions of the gun, very prettily finished with a traditional blue finish rather than the usual washed-out industrial phosphatizing, so it may be their pretty little products that have so impressed Sgt Smith. And the extra barrel length of the SMG puts that fine little Tokarev cartridge very nearly in the class of the US .30 carbine.
Note, however, that there's one or two versions of the 7,62x25mm Tokarev/Mauser ammunition that you'd be wise to avoid using in your CZ should any of it cross your path, as I usually do with my own C96 Broomhandle Mauser, though I've got a few stripper clips loaded up for very limited special purpose uses.

I've got plenty, loaded for my C96 Mauser *broomhandle* pistol, carried in daily use as a particularly useful and practical car/truck gun due to a glitch in local state law, and for my Polish-made Tokarev TT33 pistol, for both of which I reload.
If it comes down to that, it's reasonably easy to shorten and ream .223 cases and reform them into the 7,62x25 bottleneck configuration, or use 9mm barrels reworked for the 9x23mm or 9mm Largo chamberings in the .30 caliber weapons.
If you need any, including saboted .224 bullets or .30 carbine tracer bullets loaded into 7,62x25mm cases for handgun use, just let me know.
