Yes, but there are some things that will "cross the placenta", and some things that won't. My doctor drew a little diagram for me. It showed little "openings" shaped like dashes, or subtraction signs. Then he drew little "plus" signs. He said, see, when this "plus sign" tries to get through the dash-shaped opening, it can't fit.
I know that's clear as mud, but anyway, only certain molecules, or whatever (of the right shape) can penetrate through the placenta and get to the baby.
I think most of us just don't want to take or use any special substances b/c we just want to err on the side of caution. But actually, some of those substances can't get through to the baby anyway.

I understand what your saying. However, there are doctors who suggest that an expectant mother should not drink coffee, because the caffine gets to the baby, along with antibotics, alcohol and a host of other substances.
Still, I think a toxi-test should have been done on Connor.
