It's the laughable pretentiousness.
His stilted way of saying things reminds me so much of my friend's ex-husband, who was also a manufacturer's rep.
The guy made money hand over fist, but inwardly he apparently felt just a bit inadequate b/c he'd never gone beyond getting his bachelor's. So he overcompensated by having this whole speech pattern which he would switch on "when there was a serious occasion."
