If Jesus had a wife, it wouldn't have damaged the theology of Christianity in the least.
But since there's no evidence that I know of that suggests that he did, why is this even an issue?

Years ago, I read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" which speculated that Christ was married, and not only married, had children. That's the reason for the special, I think...that somewhere there's a "bloodline" of Christ...living decendents.
I swear, what will they think of next...

Feminism, for one, and a modern liberal anathema to celibacy.

One could argue that the virtue of continence was exemplified by Christ's perfection of the virtue.
That's an interesting discussion...

Part of the ongoing attack on Christian chastity as a virtue.

Actually, it would've... It'd make his willing death not only an abandonment of his earthly mother (which we all must do), but also of his wife.
(Of course, if you're Catholic or Orthodox, it would refute priestly celibacy.)
If you're familiar with the book, the whole thing is a mockery of Christianity which supposes that the early church was a bunch of evil, hate-filled, misogynistic men, and by extension, if we follow in their footsteps, we perpetuate the evil, hatred and misogyny.

Right, like you said, ultimately it would not damage Christian theology, especially since if it was always taught, we would see that as the normal teaching.
However, from a matter of respect for truth and history, there is no evidence to believe He was. And ABC's documentary is just an attempt to get ratings by offending peoople.
