Darwin did absolutely no scientific work during the 20 years he was writing that garbage. In fact, he never did an honest day's work in his life. The Beagle voyage was long before he started writing the Origins. And his work there was nothing we would call science nowadays. He was employed as a naturalist merely cataloguing what was seen not experimenting or examining anything scientifically in any way. In short he was little more than a bird watcher.
