In a confidential memo leaked to USA Today, Donald Rumsfeld asked four top aides to address tough questions like, "Are we winning or losing the global war on terrorism?" and to come up with new strategies. The Defense Secretary described the future of the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan as "a long, hard slog."
What is revealed by the Rumsfeld memo?
A- Good management. Brainstorming provocative queries, seeking candid opinions, urging within-the-box cogitation -- Rumsfeld must be watching the same war I am. Way to wade in, big guy.
B- Bad faith. If even the Happy Warrior is talking like Eeyore, why does his boss keep declaring things like, "Were rolling back the terrorist threat...at the heart of its power"? The emperor has no shame.
C- Decent ass-covering. Rummy knows the nasty is about to hit the fan. This gloomy memo will distance him from the blowback. That's why he "leaked" it.
