Collapse at Tropicana
ATLANTIC CITY-October 30, 2003 Emergency workers are at the Tropicana casino on S. Brighton Ave. at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. Police say about 6 floors have collapsed in a construction area.
Early reports indicate there are people trapped, but that has not yet been confirmed.
Officials are setting up a triage center to handle any victims, but there is no word yet on extent of any injuries.
The incident happened around 10:40am.

UPDATED: 11:28 a.m. EST October 30, 2003 ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- A five-story section of the Tropicana Casino and Resort's parking garage that's under construction in Atlantic City has collapsed.
Emergency crews are on the scene.
Atlantic City's deputy emergency management director says at least two people were injured in the garage collapse at the Tropicana Casino and Resort.
The ten-story garage is part of the Tropicana's $245 million expansion.

that happenned in CT a few years back. "lift slab construction" is what I beleive its' called. they banned it in CT afterwards. 76 people dies, IIRC L'ambiance plaza was the name of the place.

Whoa! I used to work in an office building that had an attached garage that sounds like that. They didn't have enough parking, so the valets took all the excess up to the top level.
Fortunately, somebody with a brain made them cease and desist with this practice, fearing just such a collapse.
From then on, poor Alfonso and the boys had to park 'em around the neighborhood.

UPDATED: 11:33 a.m. EST October 30, 2003 Allyn Seel, deputy director of Emergency Management for Atlantic City, said he was directing the set-up of a triage area to evaluate injured workers. He said there were hundreds of workers on site and they were being ordered away from the accident.
Maureen Siman, a spokeswoman for the casino, said she didn't know the extent of the injuries.
"They're doing a head count now," she said.
