Washington D.C (10/23/03) – U.S. Copts Association received several phone calls from families and friends of over 20 Egyptian secret converts from Islam to Christianity who have been detained by the Egyptian police since October 20th.

The assault started with the arrest of a husband and wife who secretly converted from Islam to Christianity. Yousef Samuel Makari Suliman, whose former Muslim name was Muhammad Ahmad Imam al-Kurdi and his wife Mariam Girgis Makar formerly Saher El-Sayid Abd al-Kani and their two daughters, Sarah and Marina (formerly Sarah and Shaymaa) all had secretly converted to Christianity and had been living as Christians in hiding. The couple was arrested by Colonel Taha Afify from the Criminal Investigative Research unit in the civilian affairs department of Alexandria police. Lawyers who were able to visit the couple report that Mariam Girgis has been the subject of sexual assault and attempted rape by police officers. In addition, she and her husband were beaten and physically abused. An investigation was opened by police in the Al-Muski police station of Cairo (case no 3793 for the year 2003) after the couple was transferred from Alexandria.

Following the arrest of Yousef and Mariam, the police arrested individuals who helped them secure new ID cards with new Christian names. Under sever torture; the police was able to extract the names of some 100 other converts who secured new ID cards with Christian names. Immediately, thereafter, 20 more converts were arrested in Alexandria alone.

Officially the 22 arrested converts being charged "with falsifying ID papers," because they obtained new ID cards with their Christian names. Initial reports indicated that lawyers were able to negotiate the release of Yousef from police custody; however, we are told this information is inaccurate. Both Yousef and Mariam are still in prison while their children are with friends.

U.S. Copts Association is concerned that the Egyptian police maybe targeting at least 100 converts from Islam to be arrested in the upcoming days. ‘It is ironic that while the Egyptian constitution guarantees the individuals’ freedom to change his or her religion, the Egyptian government repeatedly violates the constitution by harassing, torturing, raping, and holding converts indefinitely to pressure them to leave their new faith. In addition the government does not legally recognize conversion from Islam to Christianity and, as a result, converts lose all their rights, inheritance and all positions” said Michael Meunier, president of U.S. Copts Association.

The U.S. Copts Association will be leading a congressional campaign in the U.S. Congress to ensure that this repeated violation of individuals’ rights and freedom by the Egyptian government is exposed.

Egypt gets $2billion/year from us, and its government supposed to be our close ally, yet we are in fear of demanding justice for the minority Christian Egyptian citizens. One of the reasons this Islamic fanatic movements grew so large around the globe was simply because the US and the Europeans refused to stand up to these barbaric Moslem regimes, and demand justice and equality for minority Christians, and Jews. The West always consider this oppression “an internal affair” of the dictator.

I thought that the war in Iraq was supposed to make things "better" in the Arab world.

Are you saying the Arab world is 'better' with a bunch of terrorists/terrrorist supportors running their countries?

"All Americans must recognize that the face of terror is not the true faith -- face of Islam. Islam is a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world. It's a faith that has made brothers and sisters of every race. It's a faith based upon love, not hate."

No, I am just pointing out the hard/cold fact that overextending our troops in a futile effort to create a democratic/unitary state in Iraq is not accomplishing the stated goal. Even by your own standards, it is proving to be a utopian and Wilsonian pipedream which only detracts from our national defense.

I don't have confidence that the governments in Iraq and Afganistan will be pillars of Democracy, but they will be improvements over what they had. But these are wars and enemies that need to be fought, and Afganistan and Iraq are as good of a place to be fighting as any. The more of those SOB's who die fighting for Bath/Taliban/Osama/Saddam the better. These people want to destroy the US, and of course Isreal. The US must send a strong message to the terrorists, we will not back down from their tactics. I just wish Bush was more Reaganesque in his speeches in gaining public support for our efforts.

You think the arrest/persecution of Christians in Muslim countries is a new phenomenon?

Copts in Egypt have been persecuted for years, even before we ousted Saddam.

You are correct. This is sad, but not new.

I'm not absolutely certain, but I think you may have left out a couple of cliches there...but it was an impressive bromide none the less.

It's ironic ---- these people who have no belief whatsoever in freedom of religion or freedom of speech can come here and use our belief in freedom of religion and freedom of speech to destroy us.

I blame us for not DEMANDING reciprocation. If we were weaker than they are, it would make sense. If we were not giving these losers financial aid to feed their hungry hate-filled population, it would make sense. All we need to do is say: I expect reciprocity, other wise I will cut my financial aid. You will allow Christians and Jews to build houses of worship or I will demolish the mosques that you have built in America. How UNFAIR is such demand?
