WASHINGTON (AFP) - George W. Bush hosted a Ramadan dinner with US Islamic leaders, as the White House was besieged with demands to fire an army general whom made comments some say makes the US-led war on terror out to be a war on Islam.
General William Boykin's comments surfaced two weeks ago, in which he likened the US battle against terror to a battle between Christiandom and the Muslim world, placing the Bush administration in an uncomfortable position.
While the Pentagon (news - web sites) has opened its own investigation, it has also said that it does not expect to ask Boykin to resign. He continued to serve as a undersecretary of defense for intelligence, in charge of tracking down Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) among others.
Bush invited Muslim leaders to an Iftar, the evening feast that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast Muslims observe during the month of Ramadan. He organized the first White House Iftar after bin Laden and al-Qaeda launched the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.
"America is a land of many faiths and we honor, and welcome and value the Muslim faith," Bush said in opening remarks before the meal.
At a mid-day press conference earlier Tuesday, Bush said that the controversial Boykin "doesn't reflect my point of view or the view of this administration."
"Our war is not against the Muslim faith."
"Americans think terrorists are evil people who have hijacked a great religion," Bush said, responding to a reporter's question.
Such statements, however, did not quell the Boykin controversy.
"The obvious response to the Boykin case is to say that because he is now under-secretary of defense for intelligence, he should be relieved of his post," The Washington Post said in an editorial Tuesday.
Boykin made his questionable speeches while wearing his military uniform before conservative Christian groups whom Bush will woo as part of his 2004 reelection campaign.
"It is highly likely that Bush himself, a genuinely devout Christian by all accounts, agrees with at least some, perhaps much, of what Boykin said," the Post speculated.
The US president had just returned from a tour of Asia, which included a three-hour stopover in Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population. He also met with several leaders of Muslim countries at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC (news - web sites)) forum.
"Muslims are completely wrong to think that the US is engaged in a war against Islam," New York Times columnist Paul Krugman said.
"But that misperception flourishes in part because the domestic political strategy of the Bush administration -- no longer able to claim the Iraq (news - web sites) war was a triumph, and with little but red ink to show for its economic plans -- looks more and more like a crusade."
Did you think that maybe they just moved away?
You're back to falsely accusing me of being a drinker and a Nazi again? You've called me (and many many others) both in the past but never I've never seen both on two adjoining posts. I'm honored!
OK Louie, I won't bother you any more tonight as I don't want to induce one of your tantrums. As entertaining as those can be, I'm just not in the mood to watch it right now.
What a great concept!
I guess we all now get to decide what's a religion, and what's not!
I vote for not considering those guys that show up at my house every Saturday carrying the Watchtower to be a religious group!
Maybe, we can also not recognize the people that think handling snakes is part of religion!
I guess the left get the next pick.
Doesn't it bother you to spend so much time agreeing with the left in principle?
They believe that they have the right to define religion for others just like you do.
What about the guy who kidnapped Elizabeth Smart --- Mitchell aka Emmanuel. He is the founder of a religion ---- a polygamous child-raping religion ---- not all religions are good. Not all religions should be respected.
:-)
As far as pointing out the similarities between your post and Nazi verbiage, well...
I'm not saying that the government should decide what's a religion, or that anyone should "have the right to define religion for others". I didn't even allude to that. What we do have a right to do is decide for ourselves what we consider a religion and who we consider our enemies.
I know it's hard to read with comprehension when you're all flustered with such a large volume of diarrhea pouring from your mouth and all, but give it a try and come back and talk to me when you're making sense.
As for the Koran, what I know of it, I know form my Muslim friends. Are they Wahabbists? No. Are they peaceful Muslims. Yes. Are they moderate Muslims, meaning, do they know that the parts of the Koran that say 'kill infidels' is written for a specific moment in history, just as part of the Old Testiment is? Yes. Have they condemned the terrorists? Yes- and in public as they are part of a group seeking tolerance and understanding for all religions- of which Christians and Jews are a part. So, instead of telling someone else to educate themselves, you should take your own advice and learn that the cold-blooded actions of a few backward, sick MoFos does not speak for every Muslem. If that were true, everyone would think that all Christians want to kill abortion doctors. And we know that simply is not true.
While I believe that the ultimate war is going to be between Christians and non-believers, my speculation is that Islam (or an end time version of same) will ultimately contain most of the world's non-believers. That said, I think the big question for our day is whether the Muslim war is or is not against us!
The Post article referenced in this article was excellent -- I read it yesterday (I think) from a toogoodreports.com link.
It's hard to believe (in fact, I don't believe) that GW does not understand the enmity between Judeo-Christianity and the descendents of Ishmael (i.e. Muslims)/followers of Mohammed. He does profess Christ and appears to walk the talk, so I'm having difficulty with this BS. He is sadly mistaken if he thinks he can either "nice" these people into liking us (and therefore not bombing us anymore), which would be unbelievably naive OR "nice" these people to Christ, which is a slap in the face to the truth. Truth and "nice" are two different things!
I don't envy him this rock/hard place position (he is the president of all Americans), but I do expect truth from him (silly me!) and saying that Islam is a religion of peace is a lie and he knows it. Further, I expect him, as a Christian, to fully support other Christians, i.e. Gen. Boykin, who speak the truth.
/sarcasm on I suppose there are many who believe GW has a brilliant, secret strategy up his sleeve. /sarcasm off
I really really hated to see pictures of this PC celebration of Ramalamadingdong in the White House -- it made me sick to my stomach.

I wouldn't count on them defending religious freedom --- not even in that circumstance. I've talked with very nice Persians who tell you what is going on in their country ---- how much suppression there is since the Islamics have taken over, how the women must put on brown rags ---- never dare to show their face in public. They get pretty honest about what Islam is --- but if you ask them if they are Muslim, you get dead silence ---- no answer at all. I make the assumption --- and I'll admit that's all it is, is even here they are too frightened to admit they may have left that religion ---- for fear of death --- which is the penalty for leaving. So maybe they are the peace-loving Muslims, they don't like the way their religion is but they can't leave it either.
This is wishful thinking. "Kill and rout the kufr" is true today and has been true for all Muslims making Jihad. Is also true for the Muslims who are quiet but like what the Jihadists are doing. Look around the world and you will find Jihad is for real today. Not just in a distant past.
The problem with Islam: The Koran tells us (even glorifies) about the life of blood, assassination, conquest and Jihad that Muhammad lead. The Koran exhorts Muslims to emulate the "exemplary" life of Muhammad. The only Muslims we can deal ones who ignore this exhortation, and there are many. They are Muslims only due to birth and habit. But this can never negate the fact that the central figure in Islam decimated those who resisted his religion_in_the_making. That through history many of his followers have copied Muhammad's aggressive, murderous ways.
LMAO. Then you to tell him patiently like 10 times that you're not a libertarian before Dane-bot realizes it's time to turn off his libertarian_oneliners.exe.
I love this guy, he is truly the Mozart of morons.... some kind of double digit IQ prodigy, the exhalted Zen Master of the completely stupid. He needs to be studied. He's absolutely hillarious without even trying to be. I'm laughing my damn head off right now, God bless him.
Blech. Typical liberal new-think-barf-speak. How many abortion "doctors" have been killed in the last decade by Christians? Now, how many thousands of INNOCENT men, women and children have been slaughtered by these people just for being Jewish, American or in the wrong place at the wrong time? You're not making any sense.
This is not a "few backwards sick mofos". Millions of their children are being taught this sick garbage by their so-called religious and educational leaders. It's not oddball as your inapplicable comparison to the abortion killers, it's pervasive and constant like a cancer.
Please don't equate the occaisonal Christian who flips his lid with the concerted effort of a large percentage of middle east Muslems who explicity stated that want all of us dead and have taken well planned, well funded (all the way up to the government level) actions to see that such is done.
Do you people even read the bible? Lesson #1 is our God is a jealous God, ISLAM IS NOT A GREAT RELIGION. This is glaringly evident by their God, thier fruits and their sctipture. You are way wrong here girl, I suggest you right yourself.
You mean the members of my fan club who happen to be here? I love these guys, I'm not kidding either. They're good people deep down inside and they don't really bother me.
Heck, there's even a remote chance that I might even be related to Louie-the-liberal in some far distant way. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCK! I'm hopeful that I'm not because he's a bit chubby and that doesn't really run on my great-great grandmother's side of the family. In any case I'm sure Louie is getting ready to send me a bill for the countless hours of entertainment he's provided me.
Dane is just naturally hillarious without even trying to be. He, IMO is an absolute Godsend to FR. I'm honored that we have THE worldclass hero of the stupid right here on on this forum, and that he actually takes the time out of his hectic schedule of being a jackass to correspond with me.
Besides he's harmless, until he starts bearing false witness against dead people. That's where I draw the line.
LMAO. Then you to tell him patiently like 10 times that you're not a libertarian before Dane-bot realizes it's time to turn off his libertarian_oneliners.exe.

Gotta love me, that is for sure auto club. Too bad you don't have the courage to say stuff to my face(as in not pinging me in your reply #315), that's your problem. Probably the least of your problems though auto club. Modern day political comprehension seems to be your big problem now, IMO.
"Wait a minute, I thought America was a Christian country. -Kerberos"
Yep, most of us respect the Muslim's right to choose. But welcome, honor and value the Muslim faith. I don't think so. Not at all.
