No argument here. Of course, I'm happily married, so I really haven't noticed. Ahem.

Hmmmm.
What was that I read about protecting our Constitution from all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC?
Just how close do you suppose the "open border elites" are to crossing over to the "fair game" category?

What the---? family reunification? Shouldn't TRUE family reunification occur SOUTH of our border?
And Senator Hatch, come on... Speaking as a Mormon and a former Utahn, the time has come, Orrin. Time to go home. That guy has been in Congress for, what, almost 30 years? And he comes up with this cockamamie idea? Utahns need to vote the rascal out!

Pretty close, I'd say.
I have to admit, I'm finally coming around on this isue. I think with me, it was like it was with many Americans. I naively thought the flood of illegals was no big deal for a while. Why?
1) I know many Mexicans and other Latinos. And as persons, I like most of 'em. Most of them that I know (even those whose legal status I suspect) are nice people, hardworking, friendly, etc. This kind of blurred the issue for me.
2) I don't live in a southern border state, so for a long while I never saw the effect that low-wage, unskilled workers had in driving down the prices paid for labor in a market. Having some distance from the issue, I tended to think that it was a minor annoyance, and simply "someone else's problem."
Well, I'm finally seeing the light and realizing this is a real, serious problem, and it's EVERYONE'S problem. It's hurting our whole economy, and leaves our country horribly naked and exposed to terrorist infiltration. And just because they may be nice people, that does not change the fact that THEY HAVE BROKEN OUR LAWS. They need to get out, and maybe, maybe, we'll consider them for future LEGAL immigration after, say, a 15-year banishment period.
Foreign and domestic enemies...I'd say you're right.

Did anybody catch Hannity and Colmes last night, when Alan Colmes brazenly, pathetically tried to spin for Pelosi? He was saying that she "obviously" meant to say that the Wal-Mart raids were conducted in a way that the effect was to "terrify" the illegals, not "terrorize" them, as she ACTUALLY said.

I have to admit, I'm finally coming around on this isue.Your post reflects the views of millions of Americans, including mine. I was raised in a border town and was vaguely aware of the changing ratios and atmosphere.
Then I moved to Tennessee and, over a thirty year period, never gave the matter much thought. Visits back to New Mexico now, however, leave me shaking my head, wondering how I could have been so blind. The change is so drastic that it is depressing.

Before September 11th, the Bush Administration, cheered on by the Journal and La Raza, was ready to give Mexican President Vicente Fox a nice gifta partial amnesty for the illegals living and working here, along with a guest worker program to allow other non-citizens to come and work here. The attacks forced the Bush Administration to put amnesty on the back burner. (They refuse to call it amnesty, preferring to call it family reunification) Amnesty would have been an impossible sell since we learned that the hijackers exploited the sloppy administration of visa system and the non-existent checks at our ports of entry. So the open border elites cooled their jets for a while. But now the unholy alliance between conservatives who dont want to offend businesses and liberals who dont want to offend Hispanic voters is stronger and more vocal than ever. They feel enough time has passed, that the rest of us will just buckle into the pressure as they ram through policy after policy that weakens our immigration laws.
President Bush has always been on the wrong side of the Illegal Alien issue. Always. Until he's shown he's changed, he hasn't changed.

We're the ones told to shut up and sing. The elites know what's best for us and we'd better mind our own business and leave immigration policy up to them.

What's the best way for Republicans to get the message to Bush that we DEMAND strict enforcement of borders and immigration laws? How do we get him to change?

The best way to get the message across would be to vote for a conservative for President.

For a guy who came out of nowhere, he has more power and input than those of us who have been hard-working and faithful Republicans for decades. I am NOT a happy Republican camper!
