The courts uphold the laws.

Please stop it. Unless you're incredibly naive or under the age of 12, you know that the judical system today is broken, filled with activist judges that do not uphold the law, but make laws from the bench.

There is certainly some truth to that but every decision rendered by the courts is not automatically incorrect or "activist". If everyone decides individually which court decisions they will honor and which not, the result is anarchy and chaos. Our legal system and our political system both are in sad shape and need serious correction but they are still better than anarchy and chaos.

The real point here is that the courts were presented with credible evidence that there is no conscious brain activity in Terri; her responses are reflexive and not cognitive. The evidence is that she is in a "persistant vegitative state" and therefore brain dead. This is not a snap determination, she has been like this for over 13 years. There are disturbing and distracting factors present here but at some point in every individual's human experience it is time to let them go, that point for Terri seems long past. The attention and resources focused on Terri would more than likely be better used supporting other life issues.
