[history]
A jury of five men and seven women deliberated a day and half before finding the Rev. Phillip Mielke, 44, not guilty on four counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
Mielke stood passively and showed no visible emotion as the verdict was read, except for smiling slightly at his attorney, Jim Gilmore. Afterward, he said only "we're happy it's over," then refused to answer further questions.

Both had criminal histories, and both were found to have drugs in their systems at the time of the shootings. Troopers also found a loaded .357-caliber handgun in the church basement with DNA from Palmer and possibly Jones on it. First I heard of either of these facts.
Anyone else?

Troopers also found a loaded .357-caliber handgun in the church basement with DNA from Palmer and possibly Jones on it. Aside from the Pastor's apparent forgetfulness of Luke 6:29, seems like the guy made the proper strategic choice.

Troopers also found a loaded .357-caliber handgun in the church basement with DNA from Palmer and possibly Jones on it. (Prosecutor) Collins said Mielke should have called troopers when he saw a car idling outside the church instead of grabbing a .44-caliber handgun and taking matters into his own hands.
Just dial 911 and wait..........meanwhile a couple of armed theives or would be rapists can ply their prediliction on you family.....
The prosecutor doesnt like sheep having power over their own lives.....only the elite...like himself should....regardless of their incompetance or inability to protect their charges

He doesn't seem to have forgotten Luke 22:36-38, though.

"He fired twice at the men, hitting both in the back" Entry wounds to the back makes me think they were retreating. Couldnt he aim for a foot? I don't agree with deadly force if the perp doesnt obviously want to inflict bodily harm.
Yes, he got rid of two scum bags. Justice served, but I hope this guy never becomes a cop.

"People are going to think it's OK to take the law into their own hands," she said.' In what seems like a long time ago, yet in my lifetime, a mother whose son had a criminal history would have the decency to be ashamed and keep her mouth shut when her son met the fate he exposed himself to. And while she may feel like Satan took over the Chapel that morning, Satan had evidently taken over her son long before that.

As PC as it sounds to "call the police", it isn't practical in many cases. I live alone in rural area. If I called sheriff for any reason, the MINIMUM time I would expect to see them is 20 mins.
Lots can happen to me and my animals in that time. That's why Mr Remington resides here with me.

How good a shooter are you?
I wouldn't even try "for a foot" with running perps.
Go for body shot and hope that hits something.
To: skeptoid
and then continued to fire at one man as he ran awayThe jury returned the wrong verdict, given that one fact.

Go for body shot and hope that hits something.I agree with this statement. Shoot first and ask questions later.

Not to mention that the perp would probably later sue him for intentional maiming.
To: neefer
Couldnt he aim for a foot? Then it's an open and shut case of aggravated assault or possibly attempted murder. If you feel comfortable enough to 'aim for a foot' then shooting is not justified.
Don't shoot to kill or wound, shoot to stop.
