Brush Fires Burn 105,000 Acres In Ventura County
Brush fires have burned 105,000 acres in Ventura County over the past four days, destroying or damaging dozens of structures and prompting Governor Davis to declare a State of Emergency. The largest fire is the 80,000 acre "Simi Fire" which has burned in the Simi Valley, Moorpark, Somis, Bardsdale and South Mountain areas. That fire flared up in several locations Monday morning with renewed Santa Ana winds, most notably at the east end of the fire near Highway 118 at Rocky Peak. It's threatening the Box Canyon area and Bell Canyon could have problems. Meanwhile, the 25,000 acre "Piru Fire" has burned up to the northeast city limits of Fillmore. They thought that fire was almost fully contained Saturday night, but it jumped its containment lines and moved through the Sespe Condor Sanctuary and down towards Fillmore and Piru.
