Fire Related Flight Cancellations & Delays
LOS ANGELES With more help in the tower Monday, controllers at Los Angeles International Airport were able
to send out 60 planes an hour, twice as many as the day before and just under the usual 70, an official said.
The problem occurred yesterday when air traffic controllers at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in
northern San Diego County had to evacuate due to a nearby wildfire. Many of them were sent north to the LAX tower.
That cut the rate of departures at LAX to 30 an hour, less than half the usual output, and also resulted in
some delays and cancellations at Lindbergh Field in San Diego.
It also backed up the inter-linked U.S. system and resulted in dozens of flight cancellations into LAX, Burbank,
John Wayne and Ontario.
But as of 2 p.m. today, according to Los Angeles World Airports, the airlines were projecting that 220
inbound or outbound flights would be canceled for the entire day, roughly 13 percent of the usual 1,700 a day.
And no flight cancellations were anticipated by the roughly 40 foreign air carriers at the Tom Bradley
International Terminal.
Delays yesterday were averaging hours. Today the delays were ranging from zero to 90 minutes, according to LAWA.
