They are just trying to gin up interest & it's worked so far.

I'd say they are pleased with the ginned up publicity.

There's only one way it would backfire on them. If President Reagan were to pass on just prior to the showing, they would be left with the choice of shelving it, or just being extremely crass, and going with it anyway. That's the only way I see any serious outrage from the mushy middle about it.
