All they have to do is prevent thinning for another twenty years and their dream of concentrating humans in cities will be nearly complete.
Of course one major terrorist attack in a major city will drive everyone back to the rural areas.
Personally, I think these fires were started by the ELF/ALF, it fits their MO, while on the other hand al-qaida's MO is to attack in more urban regions and cities.

we've got enough homegrown nuts and copycats to do this - and they've done it in the past. Al qaeda can just sit and watch.

Don't they make a big deal about claiming credit for what they do?Either that or Al-Qaeda's American allies (aka the Democrats) will blame Bush.

Translation of text uncovered in the last two weeks from an AQ website. I believe there are a couple of threads on this in FR somewhere:
"We promise that we will not let you live safely, and you'll not see from us anything else just bombs, fire, destroying homes, cutting your heads. Our mujahideen is coming to you very soon to let you see what you didn't see before."

Very doubtful. A-rabs prefer their actions to be obvious and dramatic. Wildfires are a part of the West.

No, they don't make a big deal. There is a subtle difference in some of the terrorists today, and those of the 70s and 80s everyone wants to make comparisons to. Large numbers of terrorist groups are increasingly NOT wanting to "take credit" because they don't want to get caught, and they aren't in this for "demands". They are in this simply to destroy America.
We are at WAR with terrorism and they have changed their methods. Regular briefings I've seen myself tell us that these guys are not interested in identifiying themselves, but rather in identifying soft targets that will cause the most deaths, destruction and fear among the population. It's almost a myth now that terrorists want to be identified.

Yeah, maybe, but wouldn't it make more sense for the terrorist to commit acts that would never be mistaken for a natural event? There is no ambiguity when a bomb takes out a building. Not so with a brush or forest fire. There was a warning from the FBI over the weekend that didn't get much attention: that there might be a "backlash" against Muslims in the U.S. during Ramadan. I happened to catch Walid Phares commenting on it Saturday on MSNBC.
Phares said the warning shouldn't have been worded the way it was, and that his guess is that the FBI fears radical Muslims would do something aimed at creating a backlash here.
Some Islamocrazy taking credit for the fires would inspire considerable anger, whether true or not.

identifying soft targets that will cause the most deaths, destruction and fear among the population. I agree. In fact there have been recent warnings from the peaceful ones. These fires are occurring simultaneously with the attacks in Iraq and concide with the onset of Ramadan.

Stay safe! My sister just moved to a new apt (from Carlsbad to somewhere else in San Diego) and I have no idea where she is, have to call her cell in a couple hours when I think she's up, I'm a little nervous in the meantime.

Don't they make a big deal about claiming credit for what they do? In fact don't they try to claim credit even for things they didn't do, like the big blackout? There were FBI warnings several months before the blackout that they could attack the power grids. When the blackout occured and they did take credit, no one believed them anyway. Then there were the blackouts in London and Italy shortly after that.... but none since. Sorry, but I have a hard time dealing with all of these coincidences. I know stuff happens, but we are at war and I believe that at this point they will use whatever means they can.

Two men were observed starting at least one of the fires. They were described as 'caucasian', in their 20's driving a late-model van. No license plate number given.

The shooting at the El Al counter in LA was a terrorst freelancer. I suspect something similar with the fires.

It was a white, Christian, Bush-supporting conservative. Maybe Steven Hatfill did it.
