Latest status: They have stopped the fire at 805/52/15 - which is near the Miramar Marine Base. There was a flareup at Clairemont Mesa Blvd and 805 (which is about 5 miles from me), but they had firetrucks there right away and have put that out. That's heavy industrial right in that area, so it works in my favor.

Mayor/Police Chief just had press conference .. the firestation where they were - it's spitting distance from me. So far, we seem to be in a great location; apparently safe for now. The fires would have to burn all the way south on 805 to Hwy 8 in order to reach me - primarily housing. However, the Chief said we should be prepared for any change in wind conditions later today. We're just getting a little wind at the moment.

[UPDATE] Wind is calm again. And .. Chief says there is danger for 3-4 more days. That is not encouraging .. and I may take my mom to the motel over near where I will be working (Tues eve) - at least for the rest of the week. I won't be worth poop if I don't get any sleep. Will wait until after class tomorrow to make that decision.

Fires at Alpine (east about 40 miles) and Otay Mesa (south about 30 miles) are flaring up - but are not a concern to me at this time. If you see coverage at Qualcom stadium, I'm just a couple of miles west of there. Even if the Cedar and Paradise fires converge, I still have 3 other exits to escape where I am. I am not concerned about this at the moment. Air quality is so bad I cannot see across Mission Valley (visibility 2 miles or less).

Smoke is very, very bad. Cannot have our windows open. Have a fan going in the house, to keep house cool. Temp outside is 75-80 degrees.

I have a class tomorrow north of Miramar Airbase - 805 is now open, so I'm hoping there will not be a problem. This class is the training I need for my new job. My concern is leaving my mom. I will be notifying neighbors that I will be gone in case they have to leave the area. Thank GOD for my cell phone.

Sheriff giving a press conference. Not out of the woods yet. Air quality is at 90 (normal should be under 40). Advising everyone to stay home. All federal, county, city offices and courts closed. All schools closed.

Thanks for all the prayers; they are very appreciated.

um, I am grandMA! He's with his mommy in San Diego --- son is divorced.

I stand corrected! But I still expect he's in pretty good hands, either way. You all be careful!

San Diego Headline News

JULIAN, CA - One firefighter is dead Wednesday and three others injured after the group they were with was overcome by fire. It happened around 1pm in the Winola area.

Neighborhoods around Julian suffered significant damage Wednesday, but the Downtown area was saved. The town does remains under threat of fire, however much of the area around it has already burned. More than 200 homes were lost in the Kentwood in the Pines area alone. Flames 300' tall came within 1/4 mile of town, but that was it. Firefighters kept it from spreading into the historic Downtown district.

The Cedar Fire is now being called the largest fire in California history.
