Similar circumstance about 12 years ago is what led me to arm myself. Middle of the night and the doggies on my bed started barking their fool heads off and wouldn't shut up. I finally got up and when I walked into the entry found someone leaning up against the front door.
My response was to call out loudly...I'm calling the police now, I want you to leave. He did. It was only about 6 minutes for the police to arrive but it seemed like a very long wait. And I realized how much could have happened in a very short time.
I hope now that I'm armed I would have handled it in the same way.
