[history]
Incoming Boston University president Daniel S. Goldin told the school's board of trustees 10 days ago that he feared he lacked the support he needs to run the university, according to a trustee who attended the meeting where Goldin spoke.

Some board members felt Goldin was disrespectful toward Silber, and seemed bent on staking out an inordinate amount of power, according to sources close to the trustees. For example, Goldin told some trustees that he had asked a psychiatrist to analyze Silber, and the psychiatrist concluded that Silber was a "paranoid megalomaniac," according to two sources close to trustees. That sounds like Goldin's problem.

Depending on who you talked to, Dan Goldin was either a visionary leader or a mad scientist. There seemed to be little middle ground. NASA image.

Do these people live in a cave? Hiring a guy who used to run NASA is like hiring the captain of the Titanic.

Perhaps BU fears Goldin will promote the same professional environment which "did in" Columbia (not the school).

BU, through Silber, has life insurance policies on the students for years
and possibly the faculty.
So a Titanic choice, might be financially OK.

BU has come quite a way, in a positive sense, under Silber.

Well, Goldin, in his ham handed way, strikes again. I guess BU smartened up quicker than NASA.

And during Goldins tenure, the standing army required to ready shuttles for flight was halved while launch costs were cut significantly. At the same time, an ambitious shuttle upgrade program reduced the statistical chances of a shuttle launch catastrophe to 1 in 437 from 1 in 72.Statistics do lie and Goldin's NASA legacy is in this paragraph.

Goldin did everything he could to run NASA into the ground during his reign of terror. I don't know a soul at NASA who was sad to see him go. Sadly, a great guy (Sean O'Keefe) has been made a scapegoat while he cleans up the countless messes left behind by Goldin.
I fear for any institution that has Goldin as its leader. The guy is a walking train wreck.

All I know is that I'm looking forward to Dan Goldin Holiday on Nov. 17 where we are supposed to be introspective about the change at BU. Or some BS like that.
