Oh, that's awful I lived in Newport Beach for almost 20 years and those fires never got any less scary.

DirecTV 389 (KTTV) is showing the World Series at present; D* 387 (KABC) has the BYU/UNLV game; D* 383 (KNBC) has fire coverage; D* 381 has the TN/AL game (in the
4th overtime!).
I'll keep a rough hand on what's where.

Yikes..... I live in Bakersfield, but have been working in El Centro on a 4-week project. I came trhu there Tuesday when the Grand Prix fire started. I have to go back thru in the wee hours of Monday. Hope the roads are open.

Dari Alexander of FNC was interviewing a guy this morning on the phone who's house was less then one tenth of a mile from the fireline. He said he was staying.
Stupid if you ask me

Have been watching coverage of the fires on FNC today. Lots of people hosing down their yards with the fires less than 100 yards away. The winds are fierce. Stay safe!

These pictures look like the kind of damage done by "firebrands", burning chunks of debris being carried onto roofs of houses near the actual forest fire and a roofing material unable to withstand the hot contact; this is one reason why, every year, politicians lobby the state to outlaw the use of wood-shake roofs.

One of my friends just had to evacuate her college dorm and was forced by the police to leave everything behind as they were herded onto buses. Anyone trying to leave with their car was arrested.
From what I'm seeing on television, she's going to lose everything: her car, computer, the works. :(
Just heard from her and she's stuck at a local airport. All she has is the clothes on her back. She'd already packed everything (her pets, purse and some clothes) into her car, but the police wouldn't let her go to her car to get anything. Grrrr.

What's really amazing is that the homes that are burning are NOT in the mountains, but are in the flatlands of San Berdu!! This is unbelievable!!!

I thought CA building codes prohibited wood-shake shingles? Or is that for new construction? In any case, I would've thought it a no-brainer in areas prone to wildfires.
