Goldin's behavior is unpredictable. I have been told by NASA insiders that Dan sometimes does not take his meds for bipolar disorder which can result in bizarre, violent outbursts. His tenure at NASA was marked by continual budget cuts to please the Clinton Administration. Those cuts increased the risk to the Shuttle since well known problems, e.g., the RCC leading edge, could not be fixed cheaply. The RCC leading edge was probably key to the loss of Columbia. He allowed the Station partnership with the Russians to drive ruinously expensive changes such as changing the orbit of the Station to a higher inclination. That made it easier for the Russians and much harder for our launch vehicles to get there. Morale at NASA plummeted under his command. In short, he will be remembered as a pliable sycophant of Gore who let NASA deteriorate.

Morale at NASA plummeted under his command. ...who let NASA deteriorate. That's my impression of Goldin.
Currently, I'm on an anti-trustee (and equivalent) rant in general.
BU's Trustees were the one off their meds for even considering Goldin beyond looking at the before/during/after shape of NASA.
