The White House has issued President Bush's annual greeting to Muslims around the world who will observe the holy month of Ramadan.
In his message, President Bush says Islam is a peaceful religion that has helped shape the character of the United States, and has made great contributions to the world.
Mr. Bush said Americans cherish the freedom to worship and, he said, "we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions."
During Ramadan, President Bush said Muslims fast, pray, contemplate and renew their commitment to lead lives of honesty, integrity and compassion.

Not that I don't agree with you (and I don't necessarily agree with him), but what I meant to convey in my post is there are some practicing muslims who view some others as fanatics and lunatics. My friend doesn't practice it devoutly, so maybe he and many others aren't as aware of it as you are.

I agree. The more I read the more I am convinced this is a clash of civilizations. Their ultimate goal is a worldwide hegemony ruled by Islamic clerics. And trying to paint it as something else won't change the facts.

President Bush says Islam is a peaceful religion that has helped shape the character of the United States, and has made great contributions to the world. This one stopped me in my tracks, too until I thought about it.
Would we have had Ronald Reagan if there had been no Ayatollah Khomeini? We were wallowing in post-Viet Nam pacifistic impotence and ennui. The 60's idiots were shaping our nation in their drug-rotted image of helpless victimization. Victimization being an admirable state at that time.
Then the Ayatollah and his band of "students" outraged us and reawakened the American character. We remembered that there are things worth fighting and even dieing for (more importantly, worth living for), and we valued the man who said so. By the time he was termed out, the Soviet Union had fallen and freedom was "popular" again.
More recently, after eight years of decency and American values being undermined by 60's radical co-presidents, our country was in the sewer. Respect for law, honesty, patriotism, bravery and general decency were at record low levels.
Then the co-presidents' legacy bore fruit--9/11. Once again the evil Islamists attacked before we allowed ourselves to rot all the way through. They thought we'd collapse of our own decadence. Instead flags appeared on (almost) every door and people started speaking out against PC weakness and decay. America was back!
If they didn't actually shape our character, they surely helped keep it from being reshaped by our domestic enemies. BTW I remember hearing Islamists say that Khomeini was sent by God. Perhaps they were right.

Much better to characterize extremists as those who do not really abide by the tenets of Islam
By what tenets of Islam do the terrorists not abide? Here's the problem with Islam: Muslims who emulate Mohammed are indistinguishable from terrorists. Mohammed was a conqueror, a murder, an enslaver, a rapsist, and a pedophile who converted at swordpoint. So long as there is Islam, there will be adherents who seek to emulate Mohammed. So long as there is Islam, there will be terror. Should President Bush utter these truths in the midst of this war? Of course not, but neither should he give Ramadan greetings.

President's Ramadan Message
Presidential Message: Ramadan
I send greetings to Muslims in the United States and around the world observing the holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the holiest season in the Islamic faith, commemorating the revelation of the Qur'an to Muhammed. This month of intro-spection provides Muslims a time to focus on their faith and practice God's commands. Through fasting, prayer, contemplation, and charity, Muslims around the world renew their commitment to lead lives of honesty, integrity, and compassion.
Throughout our history, people of different faiths have shaped the character of our Nation. Islam is a peaceful religion, and people who practice the Islamic faith have made great contributions to our Nation and the world. As Americans, we cherish our freedom to worship and we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions. By working together to advance freedom and mutual understanding, we are creating a brighter future of hope and opportunity.
Laura joins me in sending our best wishes. Ramadan mubarak.

Muslim Organizations Call for Boycott of White House Iftar
AMERICAN MUSLIM NEWS BRIEF | 10/21/2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 21, 2003
A coalition of prominent national Muslims organizations, Imams and activists are calling for a boycott of President George W. Bush 2003 Ramadan Iftaar Dinner at The White House.
"President Bush and his administrations failure to address American Muslims domestic and foreign policy concerns can no longer be accepted.
President Bush's public statements have consistently portrayed Islam as a peaceful religion that has been hijacked by the forces of terrorism. But his official policies have done little to mark that distinction.
The White House recess appointment of Daniel Pipes to the board of directors of the U.S. Institute of Peace, was a slap in the face to the Muslim community. Pipes has a long documented history of being anti-Muslim and a number of Islamic, Christian, Jewish, and interfaith all opposed the nomination of Pipes.
A number of editorial boards including the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune, urged the Bush administration to rescind the appointment.
Bush's Defense Department invited the Rev Franklin Graham, to deliver the 2003 Good Friday homily at the Pentagon. Graham calls Islam a "Very evil and wicked religion" bent on "world domination." Many Islamic groups urged the Pentagon chaplain's office to disinvite the Islamaphobic clergyman, but to no avail.
Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin whose promotion and confirmation was confirmed by the Senate in June, has said publicly that he sees the war on terrorism as a clash between Judeo-Christian values and Satan, (Islam) The Bush administration has refused to have this officer reassigned
The Bush administration unfair foreign policy is responsible for the deaths of innocent Muslims overseas.
Muslim American leadership should send a message to President Bush that we will no longer suffer and be mistreated by his administrations unfair domestic and foreign policies.
We are urging all Muslim leaders who will receive an invitation by the White House for President Bush's upcoming 2003 Iftaar dinner to decline the invitation, and support our boycott of this event. Let President Bush eat by himself at his Ramadan dinner.

My friend doesn't practice it devoutlyThere won't be any lasting peace in the middle east or asia until adherents of islam are secularized. Citizenship and allegiance to ones country need to be strongly encouraged. Consumerism would be another suitable replacement.

"As Americans, we cherish our freedom to worship and we remain committed to welcoming individuals of all religions."
That is from the President's message. As long as the Constitution provides religious freedom for all it's citizens then the President's obligation to Muslim Americans is no less then his obligation to Christian Americans. If he were to no longer issue any religious messages whatsoever then it would be proper to not issue a statement for Americans of the Muslim faith.
Until then, as their President, and as they are also citizens of this nation, his statement is proper.
To: Sabertooth
Yeah, there's the rub. The emulation of the prophet and his writings constitute the real problem. For a true adherent, Islam is pretty much what it is no matter how we choose to view it.
To: tubavil
I agree with CAIR on not going to the WH. But I would go a step further, just get rid of the Ramadan dinner completely.
To: sarcasm
Sigh! I wish he had left out the religion of peace part.

Satanism is a religion practiced by some Americans. Should the President make statments of goodwill to Satanism? Not enough Satanists yet? What if it grows in popularity? What about paganism? How about a revival of Molech-worship? America is a secular Christian nation, tolerant of other religions. That we don't persecute them doesn't mean we have to blow sunshine at them. Until then, as their President, and as they are also citizens of this nation, his statement is proper.
He is also the President of citizens who are Satanists, pagans, or Molech-revivalists. How should the President properly address them? I'd suggest he's already done so: not at all.

Tell you what then. Why don't you pay a quick visit to Ft. Lewis then, but you've got to be quick. The Stryker Brigade and their support elements there are getting ready to deploy to Iraq. That includes about 60 Muslim American troops who are going off to defend their nation, possibly die for it.
Right now there is a lot of last minute work going on helping arrange last minute details for the departing troops and their families. They always need volunteers so I'm sure you would be welcomed.
It would be a nice experience for you and I'm sure you would boldly stand up and look those soldiers and their families in the eye and share your views of their religion. I'm sure even their Christian comrades would be interested in your opinion.
Remind these brave soldiers, Christian, Jew and Muslim just what it is they're fighting for.

I am fully convinced that I could easily live to see us defeated in this war, in fact it could happen quite quickly. On the other hand, I am also convinced that we will be lucky if my 13 year old daughter is alive when we finally win this war. I fear it will be on the order of the 100 Years War or the Crusades.....

I pray that you're not correct but I couldn't disagree. Africa and Europe appear to be in deep trouble as we speak and they're making a concerted effort in this country. Lord willing we'll wake up before it's too late. Like you, as an American and a father of five young sons the stakes are very, very high.
Keep your prayers up and your powder dry.

Tell you what, why don't you stick to the topic of this thread, which is what President Bush said, and not anything I should or shouldn't do. Here's what I've said...
Should President Bush utter these truths in the midst of this war? Of course not, but neither should he give Ramadan greetings.
Since you can't deny the intrinsic truth about Mohammedanism, you're now hiding behind the military, taking refuge in an affectation of patriotism. The problem with that, since you want to go there, is that we've got a problem with spies, moles, and traitors among the followers of Mohammed now serving in our military. We once had similar problems with communists. The parallels are not superficial. "Islam is a religion of peace" carries the same validity as "true communism hasn't been tried yet." They are falsehoods. Everywhere communism was tried, it led to misery and oppression. Everywhere Islam is tried it leads to misery and oppression. The big Islamic sucess story, the best example of a an enlightened Mohammedan society, is Turkey. Yet Turkey required pogroms and genocides of Armenians and Assyrian Christians, as well as the eradication of Arabic, to gbecome the geopolitically benign secular Islamic autocracy it is today. If Islam is a religion of peace in Turkey, it's only because almost all of the Jews and Christians were killed or driven from Asia Minor in the 20th Century. If visits to the military are your trump card, why don't you pay some quick visits to the families of our troops were were fragged by their Muslim subordinate; or to the families of future terror victims and war casualities who could have been saved, but for the sabotoage of the interrogations of al Qaeda members at Gitmo by Muslim sympathizers in our armed forces? The politically correct dissembling about Islam is not bloodless or cost free, and the Bush Administration ought to discreetly and diplomatically steer cleer from that Clintonian course.
