Deal Voids Late Davis Picks (Arnold Gets Democrats To Give Ground)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 10/25/03 | Gregg Jones

The compromise over Davis' bid to make dozens of last-minute appointments — a common practice by outgoing governors — was welcomed by Democrats who feared being criticized for undercutting the incoming governor. The 17 appointments that Schwarzenegger has agreed to preserve are to seats on the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, state water boards and the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board.

"I think it's a win-win situation for everybody," said Sen. Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles). "It was worked out in a bipartisan fashion."

In another conciliatory gesture toward Schwarzenegger, Burton and Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson (D-Culver City) have put their members on notice to be prepared to return to Sacramento for a possible special legislative session on Nov. 18, just after Schwarzenegger is expected to take the oath of office.

Schwarzenegger said during his meetings at the Capitol this week that he would call the Legislature into special session to address the driver's license legislation, reforms in the workers' compensation system and budget issues.

"We know there's a good chance the governor-elect will call us back," Romero said. "We want to be cooperative. We want to make sure we have a majority there."

Perata said: "When he wants us back, we'll be there. The last thing any of us intend to do is to be obstinate."

The Democrats gave ground. Arnold gave a little and now Herb Wesson and Phil Burton agreed to play ball. The Legislature will be back in a special session the day after the new Governor is sworn in. It may even repeal SD 60. Things are looking up and Arnold has been underestimated.

Yeah....RIGHT! I'll believe it when you overturn the DL bill, the car tax, the sweetheart union deals, and the rest of the "Liberal Utopia" that you forced upon CA's overtaxed population.

Pardon me if I don't hold my breath whilst waiting.

I agree with you in not trusting the bastards. But on the other hand there's a huge spotlight trained on them and its going to be difficult for them to get away with their dirty tricks like they used to in the past. Why? People are going to watch what they're doing now.

I hope you're right, and you may very well be.

I will, however, keep a healthy skepticism until the changes go through. Most Americans have a short attention span, and the "masses" out there on the Far-Left coast have had decades to get "comfortable" with a socialist state government.

I almost fully expect them to get up to their standard demonrat tricks just as soon as the average CA voter goes back to sleep.

The Rats are acting like a sheepish "problem child" who promises to behave... "swear to god!!"

But like any problem child, you know it won't be long before they're dipping little girls' pig tails into the ink wells again.

I was rooting for Arnold the moment I learned he was running. Lookin' good for starters. Maybe he will turn California around and help GWB next year.

"....Arnold has been underestimated."

Don't you mean, MISunderestimated? : )

This is one guy who has been misunderestimated forever. He's smarter than the lot of them, has more charm in his little finger that they have in the entire legislature, he's got phenomenal will, and has been playing hardball with Hollywood types (the biggest bunch of phony, two-faced, greedy, back-stabbers one can fine) for years. Plus, the Kennedys are his IN-LAWS!

Do I think Arnold is scared of the Sacramento dims? I do not. They'll play nice, or they'll be tossed. The people of California have called Western Union, they have sent the message!

They know they'd be as employed as Davis had they been on the recall ballot.

The compromise ... was welcomed by Democrats who feared being criticized for undercutting the incoming governor.

This is the time for Arnold to surf his wave of popularity to get things done.
