US Rep. Pelosi says Wal-Mart arrests "terrorizing"
Reuters, 10.24.03, 6:15 PM ET
MEXICO CITY, Oct 24 (Reuters) - U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Friday police raids on dozens of U.S. Wal-Mart stores in the search for illegal immigrants this week amounted to "terrorizing" workers.
"It instills a great deal of fear in people who are only trying to earn a living and put food on the table for their family," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters on a Congressional visit to Mexico.
Hundreds of workers at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (nyse: WMT - news - people) locations across the United States were arrested on immigration charges on Thursday in an investigation into contractor cleaning crews.
"We think there might be a better way to go about this because the fact is that it is against the law for the employer to hire these people so there should be more focus on the employer and less in these terrorizing raids," Pelosi said.
She was speaking after meeting Mexican President Vicente Fox for talks on immigration and border security.
Pelosi said the Wal-Mart raids showed the need to legalize undocumented workers in parts of the economy other than just the agricultural sector.
Several bills to grant legal status to illegal immigrants working in U.S. agriculture are before Congress, including the Berman-Cannon bill which would let an estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants earn legal residency.

Thanks, Nancy, I'll remember this as an example of situational ethics.

"Wasn't Hillary a big-wig at wal-mart?"True
When she was FLAR (First Lady of Arkansas), she served on the Wal-Mart Board of Directors.

I am getting more confused every day.
Wal-Mart is the classic example of a union-stomping company, and illegals don't usually pay union dues. And, it could be argued, illegals take away union jobs. Therefore, when I first heard about Operation Rollback, I figured the rats were behind it as some kind of payback for union financial and political support.
But now Pelosi seems to be telling the unions to take a hike - - illegals can do the job for cheap just fine.
I am having a tough time sorting out winners and losers here....

Well, another poster confirmed that in Arkansas Hillary was on the board of directors. If she still has monetary ties to Wal-Mart, she probably picked up the phone and Pelosi said "Yes Ma'am" and started motor mouthing. But I like your reasoning. It is strange who is winning or losing on this issue. I believe that if Clinton were still President, this raid would not have taken place. And if it did take place, a little donation to the DNC would be sufficient for the case to disappear.

Pelosi should have used that opportunity to suggest to Fox that the USA would appreciate a little help from the Mexican government, in the care and feeding of it's citizens.

She was reported to be a board member when the Felons were still in Arkansas. W-M owners are said to be heavy donors to the RATS.

What is sad on the Wal-Mart cleaner bust is those illegals were given a note from the INS to report later for deportation hearings and LET GO. The only ones held where those who had pending criminal charges.
LET GO to run, hide and get new jobs under other false names. Are we chumps or what?
