Red Light District Suggestion Stirs Debate

(Oct. 22) -- A stunning suggestion from the always-surprising Mayor of Las Vegas was made Wednesday. Oscar Goodman says the city should at least consider legalizing prostitution within city limits. Mayor Goodman is not advocating legalizing prostitution, he says it would increase tourism and bring in a lot of money for the city. His comments came during an interview on talk radio this Wednesday morning.

Prostitution has been illegal in Clark County since 1971, when lawmakers passed a state statute prohibiting prostitution within county limits. Clark County is the only county in Nevada that this statute is applicable. Washoe County does not allow prostitution. But that is based on a county decision, not a state one.

Mayor Goodman says he wants to throw the subject of legalizing prostitution out there and see how the public feels about having a red light district downtown. "

I'm throwing the idea out. I want to hear what the people have to say. I'm not advocating anything at this point. 15 out of the 17 counties in Nevada apparently don't think it's immoral. It's not illegal, and it's something that the public should really consider because there's a tremendous amount of money that could be raised as a good source of tax revenue here," stated Mayor Goodman.

Brothels are scattered around the state. The closest ones to Las Vegas are Sherrie's Ranch and the Chicken Ranch located in Pahrump, about an hour away.

It's no secret that prostitution already exists here in the city -- illegally. And some say since it's already happening, the city should be making a profit from it.

A good idea, its already all but legal there now. Most of europe has legalized prostitution and the women are licensed and have regular checkups.

Besides, I will be in Vegas in 2 weeks for a Bachelor party....

The regular check ups is very misleading. A postitute gets tested. She then gets infected by her next customer. She then spreads what ever she contracted to every guy she does until she fails the STD test a month later. Remember, comdoms are not 100% again a pregnancy. Sperm are much larger than a virus. I'd be very leary of trusting a condom for anything other than slightly improving the odds. Call me a safety freak but it's not worth the possible outcome.

The City of Las Vegas may as well legalize it as long as it is acceptable in some of the Counties. For some time now Las Vegas has been trying to promote a "family" image. I have read that this has not been successful lately. Perhaps the thinking now is that the emphasis should be to give the public what it wants - Sex, gambling, and alcohol. In time, drugs will be added.

If they legalize prositution, think of the first casino to have a sex theme on its "slot" machines. You win various amounts of prizes for the "jackpots." Some of the pictures on the wheels could be boobs, butts, or uh, other things.

Most husbands live with a complete stranger compared to the girl who walked down the aisle, and long ago stopped being attracted to their beefy angry wife.

A few years before I got married an old man told me that wives are two and three different women. Three weeks out of the month they are the gal you married, the fourth week you're not quite sure who she is. That all changes when she becomes a Mom. Now she is a protective version of the woman you married and if you agree that the children are FIRST in all situations that apply to/for them, then she stays as 'the gal you married'. Try and get between her and the kids and you'll have stepped off the cliff.

My wife of 25 years isn't beefy and she's still attractive to me. I have come close to the cliff a couple of times but luckily caught myself in time.

Regarding 'beefy', she knows I don't like flab and I know she likes clean shaven. LOL
