The Japanese Government has pledged an additional $5 billion to help rebuild Iraq.
The pledge comes on the final day of a donors conference in Madrid, which has also seen commitments from the European Union, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Australia, among others.
Japan has already promised $2AU billion in aid to Iraq, and this new pledge takes its total commitment to $7 billion.
The World Bank believes the war-ravaged country need more than $50 billion of assistance over the next four years.
Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yasuo Fukuda, says the money will be used to repair electricity supplies and telecommunications.
Tokyo is also expected to send non-combat troops to Iraq, possibly by the end of the year.

Japan has been a true ally to the US. Funny how Germany and France have turned out and you see Japan helping out.

It helps when there are nukes on your doorstep. Still, the help is appreciated and should not be forgotten. They don't have to do this.

I don't think it's odd how Germany and France turned out. They told us repeatedly they wanted no part of Iraq way before we ever launched Operation Iraqi Freedom. It's silly for us to get in a tiff over it now when we knew for a fact that it would be that way going in. I'm grateful for any nation that chips in anything- because the bottom line is nobody has to at all. If we weren't truly prepared to go it alone (which it becomes clearer and clearer we were not) we should never have jumped into the situation.
