I agree with the general

Just what did Lt. Gen. William G. "Jerry" Boykin say that he should be apologizing for?

Just what did the former commander of the Delta Force say that he should be investigated for?

Just what did the military leader of the mission to find Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden say to warrant so many calls for his ouster from that position?

I'll tell you what he did: He gave speeches representing a mainstream, evangelical worldview. And that is his "rime."

I see the attacks on Boykin as another manifestation of anti-Christian persecution and bigotry rampant through the elite cultural institutions – most particularly my own profession.

Reporters and editors for the Los Angeles Times and NBC News just don't meet that many evangelical Christians – certainly not in their hermetically sealed, exclusive newsrooms. And they evidently don't get out much – at least not to see and hear what goes on in America's churches on Sunday.

What the establishment news media, the professional Arab trouble-makers like James Zogby, the attack-Bush-at-any-price Democrats and other anti-Christian, anti-American enemies within are doing to Boykin is a "hate crime" if ever there was one.

But it's not just a hate crime against the honorable general who has served his country with distinction, valor and courage. It's a hate crime against Bible-believing Christians everywhere who identify with his carefully chosen words.

Boykin said we're being attacked because we're a Christian nation, because our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian and the enemy is a guy named Satan. Notice he said America was built on a Judeo-Christian foundation. He said this in a church. He praised the contributions of the Jewish faith to our nation. He said America should never abandon Israel because of that heritage. And that's what really bugs his cowardly critics.

If the unholy warriors attacking Boykin disagree with him about America being a Christian nation, imagine the problem they would have with the 1892 U.S. Supreme Court that looked at this very question, poring over all the original founding documents and finding with a unanimous opinion that "this is a Christian nation."

That finding was based in part on the fact that America's Founders had such reverence for the Hebrew scriptures. That finding was based in part on the fact that America's Founders – from John Adams to Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Franklin – were in awe of the historical and spiritual lessons derived from both the Old and New Testaments. That finding was based on ... well ... the truth, facts, reality.

Everything Boykin said is a reflection of basic evangelical Christian theology. If you don't like it, you have a problem not with Boykin, but with Bible-believing evangelical Christians.

And Boykin's detractors have just such a problem.

Ironic, isn't it, that while the critics attack Boykin for being bigoted, they demonstrate their own bigotry in their misguided, spiteful targeting of the general?

The most shameful aspect of this controversy, however, is not what the anti-Christian bigots say, however. We should expect this kind of thing from them. The most disgusting part of this episode is that Boykin is indeed being investigated by the ever-so-politically-correct Bush administration.

Don't they know the attack on Boykin is just a way of getting to the president? Don't they understand that the attack on Christians is a way of trying to eradicate all believers from any responsible political or governmental office? Don't they understand this is the kind of hatred that should be roundly condemned, not dignified?

Is it possible any longer for Christians who take their faith seriously to serve their country without having their beliefs ridiculed and questioned?

This Jew agrees with the general. First the Left will be going after the Sunday people. Next they'll target the Saturday people. Hate and bigotry know no boundaries, respect no limits, and reject the idea that people of differing beliefs can live together in harmony and peace. Scratch under the surface and your hateful bigot is not likely to be a Christian but exactly the opposite. We live in a world of unappreciated irony.

Boykin said we're being attacked because we're a Christian nation, because our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian

And Boykin is right. .....But it goes against the party line that the reason we're being attacked is because of 1) Muslim "humiliation" (economic, scientific, etc, etc.); 2) U.S. "hegemony."

Good post, Yoni. Thank You.

Everything Boykin said is a reflection of basic evangelical Christian theology. If you don't like it, you have a problem not with Boykin, but with Bible-believing evangelical Christians.

In my humble opinion, it would really be more accurate if in the article "Bible-believing evangelical Christians" is replaced with the "Bible" period.

The people against Boykin saying what he said really have a problem with the Message and they are taking it out on its followers and messengers.

"Everything Boykin said is a reflection of basic evangelical Christian theology."

I also agree with the General.

Email President Bush here and tell him that Gen. Boykin spoke the truth.
