Year before last, while I was in central Ontario at a wilderness lake, I auroras all around us. I was struck by how much green there was. And I don't think you were smoking anything when you heard them. I've had other people tell me that they have heard them too.

I was out watching the leonid meteor shower one night and I heard a couple of them too.

The sound is somewhat mysterious. Most likely it is due to the electric field set up by the meteor or aurora and picked up by the nervous system acting like a radio receiver. The sound is likely purely internal.
