"Radio" Starring Ed Harris (Boycott Alert!)
PABAAH: Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood ^
Posted on 10/23/2003 12:29:08 PM PDT by jonalvy44
Of our president, Ed Harris had this to say:
"I havent even been drinking, but, at all, but, you know, being a man, Ive got to say that weve got this guy in the White House who thinks he is a man, you know, who projects himself as a man because he has a certain masculinity, and he's a good old boy, and he used to drink, and he knows how to shoot a gun and how to drive a pickup truck, etcetera like that. Thats not the definition of a man, God Dammit!" --Ed Harris

Come on, we can't possibly boycott everyone whose opinion we disagree with.....there won't be any movies left to see.

Plus, he's married to, in my estimation, the most annoying actress in Hollywood. She literally ruins every movie she's in. She ALMOST ruined Field of Dreams, but it survived DESPITE her.

I kind of wanted to see it. I could give a crap less what his political views are. Not saying I agree with ol' Ed, but he is one heck of an actor. When Clinton was in office and many here (including myself) complained and insulted him on a daily basis, did it make me 'unAmerican' for saying so? Or is it only 'unAmerican' when Republicans are insulted?

just because you played a sniper in "Enemy At the Gates" does not mean that you can shoot or get to criticize native Texans' shooting ability. I'd lay good money that if you and Bush were to have accurate rifles and pointing them at each other at 1000 yards, Bush will be the one that gets up and walks off the field while you get to bleed and regret that you were ever born after picking a fight with Texas.
Signed,
A Texan that will never see you movies again.

This movie looks suspiciously like a Forrest Gump remake, concentrating on the football era of his life.

"it features a young man with "disabilities" whom he embraces as part of the football squad, showing that there is a place for those individuals if we give them a chance." What th' heck does that have to do with Radio? One would think that a movie titled "Radio" would be about, well, RADIO.

I don't think I would characterize Harris as unpatriotic but there is something the overpaid, spoiled indulged actors and musicians seem to be missing:
1) They are free to speak, I am free to keep my money if I choose.
2) Broad idiotic statements about Bush calling him stupid, evil, a Nazi etc. are merely their opinions and not fact. The broader reaching implication is that we,conservatives, are by association stupid because we either don't see this about Bush or we don't care. Hardly something to inspire fan loyalty to call me a dumba**.
3) Being able to play pretend or belt out a song does not empower you with extra abilities to interpret the world. Your opinion is worth no more than mine, you have simply been given a bigger platform to express yourself than say, my newspaper boy. It doesn't meanit is any more true.
There are a fair number of actors and musicians whose political beliefs fry me. Does it mean that I don't go to anything they are involved in? No. But I sure think twice about it, and often choose not to spend money that helps keep them on the front page and thus drives their ability to publically insult my intellegence.

Holding a negative opinion about the President is not, in and of itself, "unpatriotic". It's lame that I have to even say this. From which post are you quoting the word "unpatriotic"? I can't find it anywhere above yours.
To: billbears
I don't think we are talking about the average exchange of personal opinions. I think we are talking about a concerted effort by Hollywood/Rock to use their platforms to dis all they disagree with which, as far as I can see, is anything or anyone conservative. I would love to say I appreciated it when they were right along side us dissing Clinton, however they were too busy complaining about the VRWC and racking Clinton's victims over the coals. Just looking for a little balance.

Isn't this an old, old quote? I think this is the reason I boycott Ed Harris movies.

They are free to speak, I am free to keep my money if I choose. That is perfectly correct, but what concerns me is the pretense that you would be doing so out of "patriotism". You would be doing so out of political disagreement (which is fine, but still a different animal).
The broader reaching implication is that we,conservatives, are by association stupid because we either don't see this about Bush or we don't care.
That's an interesting point and I go back and forth on whether I agree with it. For one thing, if you look at Harris's statement as it is quoted, he doesn't say anything one way or the other about supporters of Bush being "stupid" or not. So one could say you are being hyper-sensitive. On the other hand, I don't know what else he said at this speech, and in general it's certainly no stretch to imagine that Harris probably thinks that Bush supporters are "stupid" to some extent.
But this complaint reminds me a little too much of the type of knee-jerk Clinton defending I used to see and which used to drive me crazy. The knee-jerk Clinton-defense response was never rational and I called people on it all the time - "why are you so interesting in defending this guy, even if he may have been a rapist? What's that all about? Why do you care? Are you related to the guy or being paid by him or something?"
The answer was typically like you just gave: because they voted for him and didn't want to have to think they made a "bad choice". By smearing Clinton, I was (somehow) smearing them, the people who voted for him or agreed with his midnight-basketball policy (or whatever).
My response to them was "like hell I am, that's in your head, I'm talking about Clinton here, not you". What I'm saying is that perhaps the same response could apply here.
Hardly something to inspire fan loyalty to call me a dumba**.
Fair enough. But did he do that? It's not clear.
For the record I think this illustrates the wisdom of the idea that politics and religion are things you just shouldn't bring up at the dinner table (or, when you're a celebrity, to modify the adage somewhat). Even if Harris didn't mean to imply "Bush voters are stupid!" it's not surprising that people will interpret it that way. A smarter celebrity would keep his mouth shut (I believe, though am not sure, that Samuel Jackson keeps his "opinions" to himself and has said that he does so intentionally).
Being able to play pretend or belt out a song does not empower you with extra abilities to interpret the world. Your opinion is worth no more than mine, you have simply been given a bigger platform to express yourself than say, my newspaper boy. It doesn't meanit is any more true.
All true. What does that have to do with whether or not one goes to view Radio?
There are a fair number of actors and musicians whose political beliefs fry me. Does it mean that I don't go to anything they are involved in? No. But I sure think twice about it, and often choose not to spend money that helps keep them on the front page and thus drives their ability to publically insult my intellegence.
I guess my dilemma is that if I toed this line I'd basically have to refrain from watching all movies. But I like movies. *shrug* ;-) Best,
To: jonalvy44
Sign of incoherency--the overuse of the phrase "you know." Sad, Ed Harris just got added to my list of "not to watch" actors and their movies.
To: Dr. Frank
I agree it's lame,and so boring.
To: jonalvy44
This coming from a man that chose to turn his back on Kasan during his recieving of the Thalburg award because Kasan told the truth to the McCarthy committee. I call him a communist supporter and a treasonist.

A man who wears more than one ring on his hand is de facto suspect. The beret is also a cutesy touch. At least he doesn't circle his i's.
To: jonalvy44
No need to worry about me. After being bored to the point of entering into a coma by "Pollock", I would run screaming from any movie in which he was even an extra. He was entertaining before he decided to take himself oh, so seriously.
To: jonalvy44
Didn't he play John Glen in "Right Stuff"? Looks like his politics was right for the part.

How did you get FR formatted like that?
