My wife and I have a cleaning service clean our house once every two weeks. We hired a cleaning company, and they send the workers to clean up everything. This way, we don't have to worry if someone is sick, or on vacation, or whatever. Every other Friday, like clockwork, someone (usually 2 people) comes to our house, and cleans it up. Different people, some speak English, some Spanish. Our valuable things are really big, like furniture, so we'd notice if they stole anything.

Are these people illegals? I really don't know. It's the company's problem, not mine. I don't have the time or energy to try to determine the ethnicity or the worker documentation of these guys, and I'm usually not at home when they're there.

This is probably the same thing at Walmart. They probably don't want to have to hire these guys directly, it's a high turnover business, and probably takes a lot of time. Just hire a firm, and let them do it. They do it for a lot of different companies, so they can do it cheaper than Walmart. Walmart doesn't question who is working there for the other company: they probably cannot ask due to discrimination regulations or whatever. Why you have to worry about a subcontractor's employees is beyond me. Just like the corner grocery store doesn't worry if Oscar Mayer is hiring illegal employees, or if the law firm in an office building wonders if the cleaning crews are illegals. Every cleaning crew I've ever seen has been only Spanish speaking. Why do you think we all write "BASURA" instead of "TRASH" on old boxes we want them to take?

"Basura." I'll remember that. Thanks for the tip. What does it mean exactly? It's been a long time since I spun my Tito Puente records.
