Could this be faked by putting castor oil on the letter, and letting it dry? Ricin and Castor Oil both come from castor beans, so I thought it might be a possibility.

The FBI was investigating but terrorism was not suspected.

That makes me feel much better. Phew!

Ricin and Castor Oil both come from castor beans...

I would imagine that there might be a little difference in the LD50, however.

There is - but it is the Ricin in castor oil that makes it an effective laxative.

The envelope also included a small, sealed container containing an unidentified substance that is currently being tested, the officials said.

At least they're doing things in the right order...

1. Rule out terrorism
2. Find out what the stuff is

Ding ding ding ding! You are now qualified to be a "Special Agent" - as long as you don't think arabs or muslims are involved in terrorism (and pass CAIR's FBI pre-qualification interview).

Yea, right. I was born at night, but NOT last night.

Now...where'd I put that tin foil?

The envelope also included a small, sealed container containing an unidentified substance that is currently being tested, the officials said.

The latest report says that the vial/container has been tested and verified as ricin.

The ricin on the outside of the letter was identified by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday night. It was discovered on a sealed envelope found last week in a postal facility in Greenville, S.C.

Big 'ole SC ping, y'all.

Something left over from The Hildabeaste's visit two weeks ago? You know how toxic she is!

Donning tin foil hat...

This letter was found in Greenville, SC.

The anthrax letter had a return address of Greendale School.

Aren't you relieved they've ruled out terrorism? *cough*

Especially since they found ricin in that apartment in the U.K. that was rented by the guys with the Al Qaeda ties .....

LD50?

The amount of a chemical or biological substance which will cause death in 50% of the subjects investigated. It involves a nauseus amount of statistics - which is about as boring a subject as one can find.

LD50 is a way of determning the toxic level of whatever you're investigating.
